Regular paint vs. Powdercoat
 

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting my sport calipers painted (most likely red or an orangish red). I found someone to do the job with a high-heat paint with a gloss product to seal/finish it. Would this setup be less durable than doing a powdercoat. If so, then how much? I am planning on keeping the car for only 4 years, so would this setup hold up for that long?

A high heat paint should hold up better than powder-coat in terms of discoloration. Unless you track though both will hold up fine.

Paint will look the best when initially done but it will be easier to notice imperfections and scratches on your rims from road debris after a while unless you repeatedly apply new coats of paint.

Powdercoating offers a more durable finish; however, the process tends to be harsh on rims and might affect their durability. The end result will be more or less the same for either option, you just have to balance the pros vs cons.

:icon17: I saw powdercoat/paint and immediately went with rims. In that case, powdercoating would be the best option for the calipers. I would do that over paint :tup:

lol thanks for the input. but if I were to go with the high heat paint with a gloss finish/sealer, would you really be concerned about them not holding up for 4 years?

The stock finish is paint plus clear, can't imagine why if properly done that you shouldn't get similar results.

personally i'd get them powdercoated. mike (thepowdercoater.com) on this forum does a great job of it for cheap :tup:

Oh really?!! I didn't know that, I thought they were powdercoated. That's good to know....worries are all gone. Thanks for the info. I was leaning more towards high heat paint and clear coat simply because powdercoaters are very scarce here. I found a place that actually does this and then applies any custom decal to the calipers once painted. Takes them two days to do the whole job.

I would but I don't want to go through the hassle of sending my calipers out, especially since this is a daily driver for me.

Mike i believe has a core exchange program, but I think there is a wait. Not sure on that one 100% though.

Hmm... then you might have to go with the high density paint as Chris noted above. Just be aware that you might need to paint it every so often during the course of the 4 year interval.
