Plasti-dipped A-Pillars
What do you guys think? I decided to try it out with plasti-dip before I went to go get it painted. I'm 100% sure I'm going to do it. It makes the car look sleeker and more like the GT-R roofline.
I kinda did a half-a$$ job on the plasti-dip. I just wanted to get the idea for it. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00179.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00178.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00180.jpg |
1st picture looks GTRish. But where the A pillar meets the hood makes it look off.
You should try blacking out the roof and the horizontal half of the A pillar. That'll look interesting. |
Yah, let's remove that. :icon17:
|
I wanted something like that, but with the Seibon CF part. You guys are right, the part the meets the hood doesn't flow well. I photoshopped some pictures, and the end result wasn't pretty. If the A pillar went underneath the hood, then it might look better.

And God entered the Z forum and said, "Let there be plasti-dip." This stuff is blowing up.
And I agree with the others. It looks fantastic but it's hard to make a good cut-off line due to how the A pillar meets the hood. |
if the hood was carbon, then it might work. I was thinking of trying this but taping off a line so the black doesn't flow down to the hood area.
|
Here's my idea of a possible way to tie the A pillars into the hood:

With the way the A pillar hits the hood, it doesn't look right. You'd have to do what christian suggested for it to look decent. You should mask off the hood and fender and spray the plasti dip just like he photoshopped.
|
Thats a little too much for me. I'm just going to repsray it and just equal it off with the windshield.
|
black the roof.
|
In for pics. Good luck

maybe get a CF hood and have the a-pillars wrapped in glossy (real) CF?
although that hood striping does make it a lot more fluid. |
Here's another perspective if you need it, I think this is really the best way to tie the A pillars into the rest of the car. What do you mean by making it equal with the windshield?

Here is more what I am talking about. I redid it. I'm not pleased with it, and will refine it more tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas though. That headlight one is just too much for me.
Again, I didn't do a 100% job. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00190.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00189.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00188.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC00187.jpg |
I'm not so sure about that one. It just doesn't look right. I think christian's way is really the only way to do it and make it look clean.
OT: I miss all that Spanish Moss from when I used to live on the coast in SC! |
Ah, I see. Keeping it in line with the windshield makes it look much nicer from the front. How easy was the plasti-dip to remove?
|
It just peels off after it drys. Real easy. It can leave some spray left underneath and on the car, but wd-40 takes it right off. I just wash it then polish the area to make it perfect.
I will redo it tomorrow and make it look more natural. In even think about tucking it under the side mirrors. Making it look like one big blacked out windshield area. I will find a way to make this work =p. Also, when I do get it painted after I find the exact way I want it done, it will be done in a gloss black. So it won't stand out as much. |
I think that looks great cut off at the base.
|
It's getting closer.
|
Thats the same take I posted earlier also, make it shorter to flow with the front; I like this second take

I agree, the second is closer but a little more upsweep toward the mirror or continuing the hood/windshield line would improve the side view while keeping the front looking good.
If you painted the roof, you'd have the early NSX look - fighter canopy :) |

have you tried using plasti dip on like front fand or rear diffuser? I did it and it was pain in the neck. first it came off so nice I was very happy with it. but then, when I tried to trim it with xacto knife, it was messacre. edge started to come off and all wiggling and so on...omg......... so I had to put like thin black tape at the edges to make it clean. I think I'm going to take the plasti dip off soon and just spray paint them....sigh...
|
IMO, it would look best if the side mirrors were matched- also the cutoff where it meets the hood is off, like many have said. I would like to see this done with a cleaner cutoff where it meets the hood- I think it could look pretty awesome.
|
I think you should do the side mirrors as well.
Can this be done over a clear bra? i was going to get one installed this weekend and was curious as to doing it after? |
Looks nice! I would probably tweak the area where the door meets the fender.
