Rattle Fixed! What the heck is this?

Hey Everyone,

I think I fixed an annoying rattle coming from the rear hatch however I'm not sure what the thing was that was rattling. When you take the lower back plastic panel out (right below the rear window, closest to the back of the hatch) there are wires and this black thing right in the middle. For whatever reason it seemed like the mount was rattling so what I did was loosen it and the rattle went away and then tightened it like crazy. Any idea what the heck this is?

Here's a screenshot taken from a DIY thread:

Again, it's that black thing right in the middle of the lifting hatch lid (two bolts on each side with a foamy, rubbery thing protected by a metal guard). It doesn't look like its attached to anything and just seems like it sits there doing some super secret job.

mouse trap.

theDreamer 07-26-2011 01:10 PM

It is a weight I believe, designed to keep the hatch sealed down.

daisuke149 07-26-2011 01:11 PM

its the black box that records the paratmeters from the ECu before an accident.

It also records when you fart in your car and sends it to the dealership so they can void your warranty.

Clearly it uses The Matrix, we must find Neo to stop them!

m4a1mustang 07-26-2011 01:29 PM

It's in all red Z's. If you touch it, your car turns into a 5.0.

Any other serious answers or is the consensus that it's a weight to keep the hatch sealed? It doesn't seem to heavy to be a weight.

daisuke149 07-26-2011 03:45 PM

i cant imagine its a weight. they hatch doesnt need it

my honest guess is that that is the place the motor for the rear wiper would go in other territories.

:iagree: They are cool.

KamiSpeed 07-26-2011 04:36 PM

don't remove it... I'm pretty sure you'll lose like 50 hp without it

m4a1mustang 07-26-2011 04:40 PM

I don't think it's a space for a wiper motor... the wiper is offset (towards the passenger side) on the JDM and Euro spec Zs.

TypeOne 07-26-2011 04:41 PM

Take it off....?

If your wheels fall off, let us know.. that way we will know not to do it.

:-)

shadoquad 07-26-2011 04:44 PM

It's a flux capacitor.

vividracing 07-26-2011 05:13 PM

Does it have any connections going to it? If it's got wires going to it, look them up in a wiring diagram.

TX_370 07-26-2011 06:14 PM

No wires that I can see. It's just a metal housing with a rubber block suspended by it's sides in the middle of it.

I can't believe how many comedians own 370Z!

Waiz 07-26-2011 07:15 PM

Hatch weight...

BTW hopefully you didn't break any hatch clips because that is what causes my hatch to rattle.

I don't think I broke any clips. I tried to be as careful as possible.

Yeah I know. I'm having fun too. I went to the dealership and asked them if it was a flux capacitor and they looked at me weird.

You shouldn't tell jokes to the guys at the dealership. There, they treat hatch weights as

adampetrasek 08-20-2011 09:04 PM

The way that weight is designed; how it has 4 rubber like connectors that allows it to float in the center, makes me think it is some kind of dampener.

CaptainSlow.... Just looking for an update, did this fix your rattle for good?

I took my hatch off today and added a foam gasket of sorts then cranked the bolts back on . I hope that gets rid of my rattling.

Next time I see you make sure to point this out, I think I know what it might be depending on the noise you're hearing.

SPOHN 08-21-2011 07:10 PM

I had to remove mine on my 350 due to the type of spoiler I had. It wouldn't stay up. I forgot all about this. Oh it's coming off tomorrow.
