Bird Sh*t problem!!!! HELP!!!

ok so i have a new BLACK 370z. I am very anal when it comes to keeping my cars clean and have had many black vehicles. Never have issues and always keep the car mint and in the garage. Heres the problem... went to home depot to pick up some light bulbs yesterday...85 degrees here in jersey...came out to see a lovely bird **** on my rear quarter panel. Freaked out of course drove home (approx. 15 min ) and immediately washed the vehicle. The bird SH*T looks like it ate through the clear coat in a matter of 45 min tops...went to my detail guy around the corner he did a complimentary buff and light compound and tells me that it seems to have gone through the clear coat!! and recommends taking it back to the dealer. Im going first thing tomoro morning but does anyone have any advice or know if this is warrantied and what they will do? thanks for reading this long a** post.

They'll probably tell you that you should have ordered their ValuGard bull$hit for $800.

SoCal 370Z 04-26-2009 12:33 PM

Carry a detailing spray and microfiber/cloth with you (your choice of manufacturer) and use a sealant/wax. I alway, at the very least, either use a detailer after each wash or a sealant/wax. Bird dropping are especially hideous as they can contain various natural acids in them from the berries, and fruits birds eat. Bottom line—get that sh!t off ASAP!

Modshack 04-26-2009 12:59 PM

I think you'll find your warranty does not cover acidic bird poo, or other envoirnmental fallout.. A good detail guy can make the damage go away though..good luck!

I second that. Unfortunately, bird crap will irreversibly screw up your paint if it is hot out and you don't get it off quickly. The same thing happened to me on a 07 black Honda Civic I owned. A detailer can help diminish the visibility of the "etching" marks, but it will never look quite the same!

Sorry this happened to you...I definitely know how you feel.

axio 04-26-2009 04:13 PM

Same thing happened to me. Brand new base model in black. I washed it off within a few hours and it definitely screwed up the paint. I ended up having to clay bar and then polish it out. A week later, on my drive to work, i got hit by another bird and then I immediately washed it off as soon as i got to the office. Same thing, it already got through the clear. I've noticed that the paint on this car is VERY soft. It really sucks IMO that it can't even stand up to 30 minutes of bird crap. I've since put on a coat of Meguiar's NXT 2.0 wax to protect it, but i can't comment on how well it works against bird crap cuz i haven't gotten any on it since i put the wax on.

Another rant about the paint on this car: at least on the black, there is a TON of orange peeling.

I don't think Nissan did a good job on the paint with this car.

Ace 04-26-2009 04:29 PM

I have noticed he same thing about the paint on my red 370z. It is brand new, and takes nothing to get light scratches etc... to show up on the paint. I haven't washed mine yet and am actually dreading it. I have a sheepskin wash mit, will use the two bucket method and dry with microfiber cloths. Even with all these things I am not confident it will come out not showing light scratch marks / swirls etc... after.

>135I 04-26-2009 06:48 PM

Yea I have a small mark on the roof that if from bird crap and it ate thru my clean coat. Its hard to see unless you know its there. I use a carnauba wax on my car but it still happened.

TRU370Z 04-26-2009 08:07 PM

That's one thing i like about Guam, the brown tree snakes have taken over the island and have almos completely wiped out the bird population here. I can park under any tree without worries lol!

I'd rather have swarm of birds pooping on my car rather than living on an island filled with snakes :( (I've been there)

wax did nothing? that's really disappointing to hear... maybe i'll layer on two coats or something... but yeah, i'm not impressed with this Nissan paint at all. My wife and I have hondas for our other cars and the paint quality is so much better than Nissans... a lot less orange peeling than the crappy paint job our came with, and the paint is fairly hard and swirls and scratches don't show up as much.

And a few months ago some people on this forum were saying that our cars came with the self-healing paint... boy were they wrong.

AK370Z 04-27-2009 12:21 AM

It makes me wonder, what are these birds eating? :ugh:

That's cool man, but then you should know that snakes aren't taking over the island there are just more of them than there are birds lol.

TacoZ 04-27-2009 01:02 AM

Should've gotten Pearl White :rofl2:

Just joking.

I think I'm going to keep a visible layer of wax on my hood and roof. I'll see if that protects it.

kailua 04-27-2009 02:21 AM

Bird Poo is like Alien Acid. It's almost like natural brake fluid, will eat through clear coat easily. Around here it's yellow bird poo that is common and it lookd horrible on pearl white.

zcoupe09 04-27-2009 07:56 AM

its ridiculous...this paint is sh*t...i already have a couple chips in the hood and now this bird marking and the orange peel is horrible as well as scratchin easily...love the car no complaints besides the cheap paint job...ill let everyone know what the dealer says

arcticreaver 04-27-2009 01:39 PM

well unfortunately, you can't really protect everything from nature. that's why it takes time and a lot of money to maintain a good looking car.

trust me i know how you feel, i have some similar problems. but at the end of the day, i tried almost everything, nothing else i can really do.

imag 04-27-2009 04:04 PM

I noticed the orange peel on the black I saw in the showroom, but I really want black. Now, hearing that the clear coat is pretty pitiful on this car, I wonder if it doesn't make sense to just buy it, drive it to a good detail/paint shop, have it block sanded and re-cleared, then sealed with a good molecular wax. That's probably a $3k job, but it would look awesome afterward, and it would be better protected against crap like this (NPI).

tvfreakazoid 04-27-2009 04:28 PM

If your really worried about that put clear bra all over the car. I mean that's the only way to protect it. It can't be avoided. Hell even parking under a tree is even worse because birds will drop like crazy. Or the other bad part is that sometimes you can get tree sap.

arcticreaver 04-27-2009 04:47 PM

unless you want to put a car cover on everywhere you go and park.

tvfreakazoid 04-28-2009 04:51 AM

That's a good point. Just wondering how long does it take to put one on?

Im surprised no one has asked this yet but have you tried a clay bar? Does the surface look kinda matt or sanded down black ish? chances are that it has not eaten through your paint. i had a similar bird poop incident on my black 350z and since all the birds in my yard eat highly acidic berries from our cherry blossoms believe me it was as harsh a stain as it gets. i tried everything; waxing, orbital buffer, stain removers (dont recommend any of those).. etc. last but not least i purchased a claybar from the guys at Zaino. Using it correctly it took me about 5 minutes, and revealed a brand spanken new shiny surface underneath, i was shocked. after so much effort before yeilding minimal results this was just too good to be true.

good luck and dont lose your head over it, i almost did

I haven't used their clay bar, but I use Zaino Z5 "wax" for my black 370 and I am very, very happy with it. I wash the car once a week and wax it once a month. water spots and swirl marks, scratches, streaks are almost non-existent. not sure if it would protect against bird poop but overall it has made this the easiest black car to maintain I have ever had.

Yeah, I used a clay bar. It helped, but in the end, i still needed to polish it out. The surface looked a bit matted and rough, but with the clay bar it made it less noticeable. At certain angles though or light conditions, it'd still show up though. The polishing fixed this. It's just annoying though to have to do that when the bird poo has been on your car for about 30 minutes and it does this.

LSUTurboTiger, where do you find Zaino Z5? I haven't been able to find it at my local Kragen. Is it an online purchase?

you can order everything online, their wax (Z5 when used with Z2) is by far the best combination i have used so far in terms of protection and shine. plus it lasts waayy longer than carnauba based waxes.

axio 04-28-2009 11:18 AM

Thanks, zosomoso, I'll have to give it a try. I've been using Meguiar's products (clay bars, machine polishes, waxes, etc) and i've been happy with them, but I also hear great things about Zaino.

The_Zed_car 04-28-2009 11:48 AM

Yeah, one thing i hate is modern paints. They are so soft. I always polish and wax my car with multiple layers. Keep quick detailer and a microfiber at all times. Don't park anywhere or under anything that birds could sit on.

If i got any new car, i would probably colorsand it with a paint depth guage to make the paint mirror looking (because of the orange peel).

CrownR426 04-28-2009 11:51 AM

Damn bro... It was that acidic?!
Damn jersey birds are fat and scary.

SoCal 370Z 04-29-2009 07:57 PM

Nothing a .410 gauge can't take of...

initialgemini 04-29-2009 08:04 PM

maybe you should install the anti-bird device in your car like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-ii7-q7DWdQ&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-ii7-q7DWdQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Oh man.. that sucks. Please keep us informed about what the cause of this is...

LSUTurboTiger, thanks for the link. Looks like i'll be ordering some soon...

For the birds

I got epically deficated upon the other day and got it off as soon as I could. I was appalled at how much damage was done to the paint job. Apparently this is a problem that my friend with a black altima coupe is having as well. I took it to a good paint guy and he said he would wet sand and buff the whole roof for 65$. I have already tried clay bar, rubbing compound, etc.

Its bad enough I have to get something done and I doubt Nissan will do anything about a paint issue. Anyone else had any luck with them or any advice?

SpawnAeroJohn 06-15-2009 10:31 PM

This weekI will post a minor wet sanding tutorial video on how to get rid of any sort of problems such as minor scratches, birt ish, dog ish, cat ish, etc. You guys shoudl find it very helpful since Ill make it so easy for anybody to follow because we all knows it takes practice to do all this thats why people take their cars to professionals to have all this done. But after you see the vid tutorial, you guys will feel like you have already done this before :D

cwj370 06-15-2009 10:43 PM

I think bird s**t is a problem we are all going to have. My car got bombed and I got it off asap. 2 places. It ate right through and scarred the paint, after trying everything, Clay bar, machine buffing with swirl removing polish, mineral spirits even. I can still see both places, its really hard to see now, but still. The thing that really is a pisser is I had detailed, from washing, clay bar, polishing with a buffer, and believe it or not 4 coats of sealant. If that does protect our paint what will? Now I have resealed the two areas with 4 coats and carnauba waxed the entire car. I also carry quick detailer and rags in the car now just in case. Might start carrying a bb gun for those damn birds!!!

cwj370 06-15-2009 10:48 PM

A video of that would be great. Will this be the way to remove small but deep scratches? For example, if you painted the place with touch up paint and sanded the extra away.
