Roof wrap thoughts?

I'm considering doing a roof wrap on my Monterey Blue 370z in black. I plan to black out my tint and spray the fangs/grille to have more black components.

What do you guys think about this? Any MB drivers with a black roof wrap?

Red__Zed 05-08-2011 03:27 PM

The black roof looks great on the z. It will look great against mb.

kenchan 05-08-2011 08:35 PM

+1 do gloss black. Should look very good. Stay away from DiNoc CF vinyl on the roof. It looks too fake. Already tried and removed. :D

6MT 05-08-2011 08:50 PM

My thoughts are; what will it look like in 18 to 24 months? How will it stand up to the elements?

If you use high quality vinyl and keep it maintained with sealants it shouldn't affect it much for at least 3-4 yrs. Then peel back, wrap again...or leave it off. Its imo much more convenient than painting just the roof.

lochness 05-09-2011 09:20 AM

+1 for the black roof wrap. I just finished painting my fangs and rear valance. The windows are getting tinted Wednesday and then I'm going to order some black vinyl from Bat (WWW.BLUEBATOVERLAYS.COM) later this month.

Econ 05-09-2011 10:29 AM

If you can afford it, I would paint it...will look better and last longer.

OKC Z 05-09-2011 10:44 AM

I have a MB and did the black vinyl top. I did it locally twice. The first time we covered the antenna and the results weren't great. So I had it done again but left the antenna blue. Im happy with it I payed $150 installed with 2 year warranty. I like it and also like the fact that I can simply peeled it off whenever I get tired or it gets too much wear. Which it will cause my car sees it all 8-10 hrs of sun, snow, rain, hail, wind, dust, tree sap. Its been through alot and will see more. I thought of painting but I told myself $150 first paint and if I dont like it or want to change back it will be another 150. So I went with the sticker.

yah, plus dont forget black aftermarket paint swirls very easily so use vinyl as much as possible especially on a dd. it can also work as paint protection. :D

Looks really nice, thanks for the pictures! I like the idea of wrapping things as it's not as permanent. My local paint guy does a lot of show cars and uses House of Kolor so every job I've had turned out well. Considering wrapping or painting the roof and hood, then blacking out the black window with 5% tint.

I need to get photoshop rocking to see how it might look.

Btw, never thought about painting the rear valance. Anyone have pictures on a MB?

OKC Z 05-10-2011 05:54 AM

I painted the rear diffuser on mine. I really like how it turned out. I did paint that cause I knew I wouldnt regret it.

LOL! i started searching and found that matte black vinyl looks pretty awesome.. Really thinking about doing that instead. From my search, its about $650 to do a full body wrap.

kenchan 05-10-2011 04:21 PM

yah, i would personally consider re-doing mine using bat's glossy black but matte should look good as well.

only thing with matte is if you use wax/polymer sealants to prolong the vinyl's durability it turns glossy. :D hahaha

Does anybody ever have the fangs wrapped instead of painting them? I was toying around with the idea of doing the roof as well but haven't seen anyone do it that didn't have their fangs painted also. Could I get away with just the roof? I know a guy that installs clear bras and I would just have him do it but seems like a lot of work to do the fangs and one would might a lot to do them

kenchan 01-07-2013 11:33 AM

yah, i think bats sells a overlay kit for the fangs.

tongman did his with dinoc a while back before he sold his car.

Im doing my fangs soon actually. Im using CF dinoc. I wanted it as a small project to practice before I wrap my whole car in azure blue. Im buying a 2'x4' patch.

3M BLACK DI-NOC CARBON FIBER VINYL CA-421

$50.

kenchan 01-07-2013 11:49 AM

for practice or seeing what the material looks like, a 4" x 8" can be had for $8 at carbonfibergear

MyKindaGuise 01-07-2013 01:00 PM

I would do that but I want to practice on then whole fang vent not just a section of it.

I think it looks great. But then again that is my opinion and I have yet to have anyone say they dont like it. More than I can remember complementing it.

:iagree::iagree: Look good!!

Shamrock 01-08-2013 07:24 AM

Check out my pics. I wrapped the roof black and then wrapped again with clear 3m to protect it.

VDC_OFF 01-08-2013 09:59 AM

the only ones I have seen that look good are glossy black with dark tint on the windows. This makes the roof look like its also made of glass. Dont think flat black will look good.

Also on the 3M cabon fiber. I wrapped my a-pillar in this back in april '12, it held up great no peeling and no fading until i tried to add some shine to it by using products for car shows. Now there is this white cake on it that only goes away when I add more shine. Becareful if you do this and dont use any products on it. Me, I plan on removing the 3m and get a seibon a-pillars with a real carbon roof cover next.

kenchan 01-08-2013 10:38 AM

you'll want to use products like Prima Hydro (polymer sealant) or Griot's SprayOn Wax (natural wax) on the dinoc.

no residue.

I use Mequire's Ultimate Quick Wax on my matte wrap. Doesn't look shiny. Stay away from carnuba wax

3M CF vinyl will look better, be easier to apply and cheaper to buy

TKomodo 01-09-2013 01:07 PM

3M makes a satin black vinyl. It between matte and gloss. A lot easier to maintain for scratches and clouding due to the elements than gloss

I had mine for around 1 yr now. So far it looks great. The roof wrap also can be protect with 3M clear film which I'm getting done this Spring.

Bluebatmobile 01-21-2013 12:24 AM

I've sold quite a few sets of my fang and rear valence overlays in cf finish :). Email me if interested.

I like the matte black, I don't see how the gloss roof even matters. :ugh:

SOUTHZZ 04-12-2014 05:40 AM

IMO,carbon fiber look-a-like vinyl,no matter the brand, will make your car look cheap.
If budget is not a factor, save up for a CF roof cover. Also,do matching CF parts
on your Z.I've no interest in doing my roof, but I've done other parts like B-pillar and mirror base covers( from ZCF).Really make the 370 look updated.
