Thingys To Hold The Hood Up...
 

...I don't even know what they are called... :confused:

So, they are those things you mount on the engine bay and hood that are spring loaded and hold the hood up without needing to place the bar.

Is there a good reputable pair for the 370. A set that holds all that weight up and doesn't wear out after a year?

There were, but I think the issue with the 370 is that the aluminum hood is too fragile to support itself on a pair of dampers. You can easily bend the hood.

Other manufacturers use them on aluminum hoods.

I know that was a fear someone brought up. But has anyone really bent their hood using dampers?

Yeah the hood, front fenders, and doors are all aluminum.

So is the rear hatch.

I don't think anyone really told anyone,when these shocks are open(hood up) obviously these pressure on them but once I start to pull the down about 3-5 in the pressure is not there and if I wanted to I could drop the hood from that height.
I just lower it down to about 12-18in and let it go and it latches but it not too high that I will damage it.

Surprising (well, to me...). The only car I ever knew that had a lot of aluminum in the body was the older Mercedes. (not that I'm a walking encyclopedia of car knowledge...after all, I couldn't even think of what a hood damper was called...:eek:)

So, assuming the hood is in danger...It's not actually from sitting in the open position but more from beginning to close it (added pressure)...?

So what kind do you have? Are they hydraulic? How long have you had them?

Yes, which is pretty much the danger point on any car.

Here's mine. Works perfect. Had a set on my 350 for years. I'm going to be changing out the mounting bracket that you see in the lower pic tomorrow to a simplier cleaner design.

I have only had on for a few months but my car has been off the road for 6 and I have been working on my car alott ,I must have opened & closed my hood 50-100 times(I was putting on ,Gen3,oil cooler,headlight mods)so my hood & shocks got more work on them than most people do on this site in 1yr.
Yes they are hydraulic but what people don't understand is when open the pressure is @ it's strongest but when you start to pull it down some of the pressure bleeds off,it's not at it's strongest the whole way,and as the hood is closing you have the hood weight on your side to help with closing it.

Now some guys put these on their cars shut the hood and say"my hood shocks are holding my hood up in the back"the shocks are NOT holding the hood up it is the plastic cover that cover the battery,brake master cylinder it is a very tight fit it took me a little while to figure out where they(shocks)need to go mine stuck up just a little most people would never see it but I just took off the covers heated them up with a heat gun and ever so slightly put a small bow in it to give the shocks some more room problem solved.:tiphat:

The A.M. Performance race car is setup with these as well. I was a little surprised that they would use them in a race environment considering the possible need to throw the hood up and down.

Thats why I like them. It gets the hood prop out of your way to get in there and work.

Those (pardon) look better than the other set. Well, not better but look "safer". Unless the angle is confusing me, these look like that attach further down the hood (closer to the middle). Wouldn't being connected further down the hood put less stress on the hood when closing (etc.)?

Same principle. The shocks are strong along with the hood being light. My 350 had a heavy hood and these shocks worked fine for over three years till I got rid of it. The reason I see they mounted them this way is to get the hood open further. More than one way to skin a cat.

I'd be interested in looking at a set of those (I wonder how one would find out the manufacturer...).

Yes SPOHN has the same kit I have.I don't know what kit was used in the AM car.

Good to know a lot of you guys are using the hood struts without issues! The prop-rod is very annoying.

Since I don't open my hood that often it a low priority for me.

you probably have to remove the weather stripping if you do the AM style.

No just drill a small hole in the cover for the ball to stick thru.
