Default Nismo grill paint chips

So I had a Nismo front bumper prepped and painted by a local body shop. I told them to paint the grill area black. The bumper was not black plastic, it was gray so I knew the grill had to be painted. When they called me to tell me it's done and to come pick it up I saw that the grill was not painted black, it was all blue. I pointed it out to them and they said, oh yeah we are not done and we need to paint that black. I said "Hmm, so you are going to paint it black over the blue paint? Won't that chip easily showing the color underneath?" He said no it will be fine, we do that all the time that way. I said ok but thought otherwise. Well 2 weeks later my suspicion was spot on! Lots of small rock chips with the color underneath showing! Wow just great. What should I do now???

if i was you, id make them paint it correctly. its definitely not correct practice to paint a completely different paint color over a layer of paint. what they need to do is sand it all down, re-primer it, then paint it a semi-gloss black (as is the OEM nismo). i know on my nismo, i've had a few little nicks on the grill opening and its just plain black under..

That's terrible work. If I were you, I'd take your car back to them, and go ROCK on em..

THE ROCK demands a proper repaint on the peoples grill, and god help your monkey *** if there isn't any primer on the people's grill..otherwise i'm gonna come in there, shine up that bumper really nice, then the rock will turn that sumbich sideways and stick it straight up your CANDY ***!!

tbh

Body shop says sorry that is bound to happen since it was painted on top of the blue. Nothing really they can do but redo it and hope for the best. But this will continue to happen!

So I was thinking: Do you think doing vinyl wrap on that grill area might be a better option?

So anyone know of the best way to spray paint the Nismo grill area? What kind of paint would be the best at not getting a lot of rock chip damaged? I know its going to happen, but I would like it to atleast last a few months! It's been 30 days and I have lots of rock chips. I think they did a piss poor job. I am just going to spray paint the black area myself.

What would be a good spray paint to use?

ive had great luck with Duplicolor Engine Enamel matte black. dont worry about the 'engine enamel' part. i used it on my Fit's fog lamp surrounds about 4yrs ago and still today after 3winters there is barely any chips on it. very durable.

so durable, anything matte black i use this stuff.

you can pretty much get it at any autoparts store.

before you start painting make sure you sand down the chip to get it flat...and degrease using rubbing alcohol. temps needs to be at least 70F and low humidity.

Don't spray bomb your nismo bumper. Take it back and tell them to do the job right. I will not accept a job like that.

Just an update and rant. The first time when I spoke to the guy he discounted it and said they could do it again, but it would just chip so I let it go thinking I will just do it myself. But recently I was there for another job they were working on so I decided to talk to the Manager and express my dissatisfaction over that issue and he said they would "take care of it for free" Well they did repaint it and it looked good...

But guess what happened after 2 flippin weeks? Yes blue chips on the grill AGAIN. Seems all they did is respray it with no prep!

I assume, the reason this happened in the first place, is because after they messed up and painted the grill blue and clear coated it, and I brought it to their attention, they SIMPLY painted over the clear coat with the MATTE BLACK!

Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that it will chip easily and expose the undercoat.

I am pissed and will just do it myself later this summer after I starts to look like sh!t. I will be sainding it down to the plastic, and repainting it with some kind of durable black spray paint.

What do you guys recommend? Bed liner spray? I could do plastidip but I want something permanent...

Vinyl wrap and then clear bra over it and you will never have an issue or just vinyl and it should be fine but may show underneath if hit too hard by rocks/dirt...

I would have done that from the beginning.. Its going to get chips if its painted and not clear bra over it even if they painted it correctly....
