If you open the gas door, then press lock and unlock repeatedly on the remote, you should see a white tab that sticks out when you lock and retracts when you unlock, that always happens if everything's working right. There's a mechanical latch on the door itself that engages this tab. When the tab is unlocked (retracted) you should be able to push the gas door closed (and it will stay), and push it again to open it.

However, if you close the gas door and lock via the remote, then unlock via remote, it should stay closed (even though it's unlocked), and require you to press the gas door to open it. If you press the gas to (to open it) while its locked, then next time you press "unlock" on the remote it will pop open.

You can open the gas door, when the car is unlocked, by carefully pulling on the door with your fingers as the locking mechanism is retracted. The part that makes the door popup is simply the separate black-booted push-down/push again pop-up plunger. It sounds like this plunger is not staying in the detent down position.

no the plunger is in the detent and I noticed the white tab and all that stuff. The question is I guess when the door is unlocked I know the tab retracts allowing you to open the fuel door. Mine however when retracted the door pops open on its own. The tab/plunger mechanisms works correctly in the door but for some reason the door isn't attracted to the plunger like it use to. What I am thinking is, the was a magnet on the inside of the fuel door that attracted it to the plunger and now mine is GONE.. Will you guys check your fuel doors for me!!! I am going to take it in tomorrow so, I guess by then Nissan can answer for it

There's no magnet. There's a separate thing (not the white one that the lock operates), it's a spring-loaded black rubber locking plunger thing, and you can push on it with your finger and it should alternate between open and closed positions.

In the Service Manual on this site, DLK.pdf page 231 has the fuel door exploded view. On that diagram "(1) Fuel filler lid opener actuator" is the white tab that actuates when the remote door lock/unlock is hit, and "(5) Lock and Rod Assembly" is the spring-loaded locking plunger thingy (covered in black rubber) that actually pops the door open (or not).

Thanx fellas. I got it figured out. There was something not allowing the door to fully seat like it should

Well...are you going to keep us in suspense? Was it roadkill or locust preventing the door from closing?

Yeah, give up the details. Someone else may have the same problem in the future. Gas cap tether was in the way?

Guess #2 - My guess is that it was a small, angular piece of stone.

...Please don't reveal the answer until you've had 20 guesses.

I had the same issue. At some point the gas cap tether came loose from the car mount side and I reattached near the top of the fuel door hinge. Mounted near the top stopped the fuel door from closing all the way down. Remounting the tether at the bottom resolved the issue.
