alright I got er dun w/ the craftsman adjustable rubber strap wrench as in this thread, couple of pics below;
NOTE: I used the wrench with no cloth and was able to save the stock knob!

at first i tried with a microfibre clothe and attempted to turn it from the top of the knob. the clothe just kept spinning on the knob no matter how much i tightened the wrench strap around it.

so i went at it from the base of the knob w/o the clothe and badabing! it started to turn...so slowly but surely little turn by turn by turn by turn...

and eventually i was able to turn it by hand, and finally removing it.

^ That's exactly how I did it. Although mine turned by strapping it on the top part of the OEM knob...figured, more leverage that way. It worked. I'm surprised yours spun on the base of the knob. Maybe yours was more loose?

And maybe Ken and happytheman broke their straps because they were just Hulky.

Yah, the one I posted does come with the rubber ring at goes on the bottom of the knob.
