OEM shift knob removal (SEARCHED)

Thanks! I tried to get mine off last week and thought I was going to rip the whole shifter out so stopped after a couple twists. Here i come Sears.

Since the Robo-grip pliers had the red rubber protection, I used my left hand and gripped it straight on the shaft after lowering the boot. No marring on the shaft. Then I used my right hand on the strap wrench straight on the stock knob. Voila! It gave IMMEDIATELY. No marring on the knob whatsoever. It was a matter of having the right tools and the right leverage. That stock knob was on there tight though, after loosening it with the strap wrench, I figured I could just loosen it the rest of the way with my hands... but I was wrong. I pretty much had to use the strap wrench all the way till the knob was almost off.



This was my setup. You can see the robo pliers on the left, and the strap wrench on the knob. What a wonderful combo.






Stock knob is off!!! No damage to it (front and back)!!! Look at ALL that Loctite on the shaft threads!!!






And here she is all installed!!! I love it!!!




I was surprised the whole affair took me 15 minutes total... just needed the right tools... amazing. I love the new Nismo knob on there. I haven't driven her yet, but am looking forward to it!!! It looks and feels good though however... exactly the look I am looking for.

Thank you again to EVERYone who chimed in and the existing DYI's posted in this forum. You guys are a tremendous help.

I got the same strap wrench, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to grip the shifter very well and slides off after a few attempts.

Cool Shift knob removal

After giving it some carefull thought I pulled the trigger and installed a z-car shifter. I followed the instructions from what you guys have previously posted : duct taped the shift knob, channel locked the shifter under the boot, used a strap and with a little leverage it came off,,, thanks guys my original knob is intact.

This proved to be one of THE most simple, yet irritating removals of all.

My friends and I always joke about having to make a few trips to Home Depot, for anything car related that requires some improvisation.

Well, this damn shift knob took me a trip to Sears (strap wrench), and a trip to Ace (pipe wrench). Eventually I gave up on the idea that I wasn't going to demolish the stock shift knob...I mean we hardly ever reuse or sell stock parts such as these, but we ALL feel the need to keep them in mint condition.

Well, I gave up when I just wanted to get the damn thing off. The protective towel technique was never going to work in my case, because I needed so much torque to get this damn thing off.

The strap wrench was worthless for my application.
The pipe wrench worked, but I seriously had to use it to turn the damn knob 7-8 turns before I could use my hands to remove it. I guess Nissan has had problems with these things just falling off all the time or something...lol

Anyway, after demolishing the stock knob, I'm ready to finally install my short shifter and new knob. I will post a pic once finished, but I really felt the need to vent...

I feel better already

i broke two strap wrenches trying to get the stock one off.

i said f-k it and used my larger oil filter wrench. (currently running biggy type-r knob)
bought a used mint one from a local member. he told me his came off easy.

Yup, following the DIY, I picked up a strap wrench and thought it would simple. My god, we always talk about demon bolts, well this was a damned demon knob! I didn't break the wrench, but I thought I was going to. I was so happy when I finally got the thing off.

I took mine off simply using a strap wrench. I didn't need the vice grips below the boot. It did take a surprising amount of force.

With out the strap wrench you would need a pretty serious "Kung Fu Grip".

I'm about to attempt this, I just wondered if anyone has a picture of the underside showing exactly where they clamped the mole grips to?

If you are clamping straight onto a perfectly round metal shaft is the likelihood of it slipping not fairly high?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I didn't want to make a new one for a simple question. I finally got my OEM knob off and installed one from flossy, but now there's a space between the knob and boot, anyone know what I can do to get rid of it?
