Unbelievable. Don't be a retard -- this is illegal because it is incredibly unsafe.

I had 50% on front side windows on my old car. During the day you won't notice much from the inside or out. I know people in the Philllippines that tint the front with 35%, but the cops there don't really care. The 50% is more noticeable at night, but it kind of defeats the purpose. Just remember that this is almost a guarantee you will get pulled over & ticketed unless you have some kind of medical reason.

Red__Zed 02-22-2011 03:06 PM

It's just asking for a ticket without a doctors note.

brian0128 02-22-2011 03:07 PM

What are your other windows tinted at? My sister has 5% on all windows on her M3 and 30% on the windshield. It is really difficult to drive on rainy days or once it gets dark. I have to usually roll down the window to make sure I'm in the correct parking space. If it's raining out it's also really hard to see the cars around you. Her car looks good, but damn it's dark. It's so dark that during the day you can't see the speed on the speedo. If you have dark tint all the way around don't do it, but I've seen it look ok on cars that do 50% all the way around.

TongMan 02-22-2011 03:09 PM

Why don't you just blindfold yourself every time you get into your vehicle to go somewhere...you will be so much cooler blindfolded.

wat2win 02-22-2011 03:12 PM

wow... i wanted some opinion and i sure got some.
i guess ill pass tinting front windshield....
thanks for input.

Whether it's against the law or not, that bit you'll have to take on yourself...

For me, I have a Mag. Black Z. I have the side windows @ 25% and the rear window with 25% and another strip on so it's more like 10-15%. On the front I have 50% to block out some of the sun here in Phoenix. And I can say it's stock because with the darker side windows, you can't really tell it's even there... If a cop were to look, he'd be hard pressed to find where the tint is on the front. He'd have to go out of his way to be a douche to prove it.

Lots of opinions here from people who haven't driven or owned a car with front tint.

My 350 and now 370 run 50% front tint coupled with 15% on the sides. It cuts down on heat quite a bit but the forward visibility is absolutely fine. I can take some pictures if you need from inside/outside, OP.

or whatever you can?

wat2win 02-22-2011 03:19 PM

im planning on running 35 or 40 all around and 50 in front. just letting people know what i am planning.

cheshirecat 02-22-2011 03:24 PM

Sure, I'll snap a couple for you this evening or tomorrow.

That's because your not suppose to have it tinted! I got pulled over for having 50% tint on the front sides in my old car. Its a primary offense in NY and they can pull you over for having more than 70%. The state troopers & local PD set up a few checkpoints during the summer in my area just for tinted windows. Not worth the time or money in my opinion.

It will be great if you can put it up tonight~
because I'm picking up the car tomorrow and going to tint shop right after.

hdskull 02-22-2011 03:31 PM

I have 70% tint in the front, it's been fine driving for me. It really depends on what you want the tint for, basically I don't want people see me while I'm driving. 70% is enough to do just that and allow me to drive safely at night.

Yeah this is the primary problem you run into... OP Make sure you check your states local laws on what is/is not allowed tint wise. Here in AZ you can get away with pretty much anything... In NY, not so much... each state is different and typically, East coast states are usually tougher on it for some reason. :ugh2:

Alright bro, I'll do my best.

elmz 02-22-2011 04:07 PM

I've seen this done on lots of exotics when I lived in Vegas, I think it looks awesome. Not sure how it affects visibility though.

TongMan 02-22-2011 04:15 PM

I understand tinting the front windshield for exotics and show cars as they don't ever see street driving, but doing it on a daily driver is just dangerous for the owner and for other drivers on the roads. Whats worst is for the pedestrians that cross roads at night. I say don't do it, but ultimately its up to the OP, and from what is seems like, he/she is already set on doing it. I just hope nothing bad happens resulting from the "cool" factor of tinting the front windshield.

i have not made my decision yet. also im not doing it for "cool" factor. Im thinking of doing it to just reduce the sun+heat.

A good reflective shield fulfills that purpose. Sunglasses add cool factor without it being permanent, i.e. during nighttime. Although, I've worn sunglasses at night because of headlights...

370zAL 02-22-2011 04:51 PM

Tint on front windshield.

:hello:

I would like to apply just "clear" windshield tint. Real and only object of this is to prevent/reduce damage from stone chips that I always seem to get.
I'm in Kali (CA), and I suppose that even clear would be illegal?

Has anyone else used this logic? My previous Honda had many, and all the windscreen chip repairs, would more than cover cost of film.

My Z is lower so it will probably "attract" more stone chips.

Also considering the clear body panel film type kits. Any thoughts on self install of these? The sellers make it look easy!!

Thanks, Alan

PS. First blog entry. Picked up my 370z 7AT base Pearl 2010 yesterday.

I've taken some on the way home during the day- I'll take some more tonight and upload them when I'm done.

Don't worry about it, you most likely won't be able to tell it's even tinted. It does make a huge difference in terms of heat, though.

Kcuba370z 02-22-2011 05:40 PM

ive got 30% in the front 10% everywhere else, ehh it aint so bad.

First off, welcome. I suggest posting in the Introduction section and saying hi to everyone.

As far as I know the only things illegal on the front windshield are tints, a clear film over it will not incur any tickets unless specifically mandated (and I don't see why you'd ever ban them).

Many people have had clear bras installed on their Z's fronts to help belay rock chips.

Use the search tool and type in all kinds of things; despite the relatively short life of this forum, you will find much wisdom (and a lot of bad jokes and puns).

I ran 50% on my windshield on a bunch of my cars (had light sensitivity issues) and never had any issues at night. I'd probably go with 70% if I did it again, but as long as you don't go really dark it's not actually as bad as most people make it out to be.

Don't underestimate the attention it will get you from police though. Even though my registration noted that it was OK, I still got pulled over all the time, and got tickets despite showing the paperwork for permission. I eventually wound up deciding it was not worth it...

Viera 02-22-2011 07:53 PM

Ive had 35% all around for over a year and so far zero problems. I will be going darker later and i think it looks awesome. Do what makes you happy, but just be prepared for the worst(tint tix).

chops 02-22-2011 08:45 PM

dont do 50%. i have 50% on my side/rear windows (and it looks kind of dark at night) and am considering 70-80% on my front windshield for heat rejection purposes. its essentially clear with a very, very slight tint. if you do it right (meaning not dark), its not anymore dangerous than not having it tinted.

I have 30% tint all the way around and a 4.5 inch visor strip across the windshield at 5%. Nice during the day can be a little dark at night. Different states have different tolerances so you may want to ask the tint people when making your choice.

cheshirecat 02-22-2011 10:08 PM

Here you go, OP. I suggest you get it. Kinda overkill on the pics but whatever. better more than less.

What is the reason you want to tint the windshield? For looks or for heat/UV rejection or both?

If it's more for heat/UV rejection then go with a 70% ceramic tint. Should have very little issues.

JJ-NISMO 02-23-2011 05:12 PM

Why do you want to tint the windshield? Is it for appearance or function?

There are a few options (ceramic and some new 3M stuff) that are basically clear, but will block out a LOT of the heat that enters from the sun.

Maybe look into one of those?

wat2win 02-23-2011 06:34 PM

Hey guys i did my tint and decided not to do front. I was going for function not for looks. The tint guy didnt recomende 50. So i asked 70 or 80 but he didnt carry so i didnt do it.
Ill post tint on sticky thread this weekend.

baldie 02-23-2011 07:14 PM

well if you can still do it, i'd say go for it.
here's how mine looks

dcrew1x 02-24-2011 07:57 PM

if it's not for looks, i'd say go for a 5% visor strip to block UV rays and bright light. That way you still have most of the windshield unobstructed in any way by tint, especially at night.

I read this a few days ago and it has been sort of festering in my head -- like a song that you can't stop playing in your brain. It dawned on me why and it has to do with you not wanting people to see you while driving. So, as I was driving home today (2 hours) I amused myself by thinking about why one would not want people to see one's self driving.

Here are some possible motivators for this mentality:

1. You are horribly deformed
2. You are ugly
3. Your girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/husband is grotesque
4. You drive naked
5. You are a fugitive
6. You smoke crack/crank/weed/grmmies/blunts while driving
7. You pick your nose while driving
8. You pick your passenger's nose while driving

I am sure this list is not exhaustive and that there may be other, more compelling reasons for your need for anonymity in your car.

Tinting the front windshield is illegal, dangerous and stupid, not to mention "ghetto". Put some spinners on your rims while you are at it. Just trying to help.
