Default Splitter Anyone...

I have not had the time to create a DIY but here is a little teaser...

I have been surviving the off season by trying my hand at some fabrication projects. Here is my homemade plywood functional front splitter. I purposely gave the splitter a 5 inch overhang but may cut it down even with the nose for eligibility to run in Street Prepared.

The splitter is supported by using longer bolts in the stock mounting holes just in front of the wheels. I also used heavy steel 8 inch angle brackets that are bolted on the front crash bar with grade 8 fasteners.

I still need to cut off the ends of the brackets but I may leave them for extra fastening points.

My supports are Allstar 8 inch spoiler support rods normally used by the circle track guys.

Here is the splitter off the car. As you can see, it fully covers the entire area in front of the front wheels. Also, try and ignore my home made diffuser in the background. That was the first time I ever played with fiberglass.

And try not to gasp at how awful my snow wheels and tires look...

You get a gold star for effort!

How much does it weigh? You might want to take a look at what travisjb is doing... he is running a fully functional front splitter and rear diffuser IIRC.

Looks like that pinhead guy.

Who cars if its functional though! use it for the track!

Why did you think you need so much support when Redline TA cars only use two support rods?

You want to see ghetto. I may have to show you a close up of my rear diffuser!

I really don’t care about looks as long as there is function. My days sitting around in parking lots admiring the latest and most expensive set of wheels (usually wrapped with the cheapest set of tires available) is pretty much over. I see my 370Z as a tool I use on the track.

I used the four support rods because with only two the splitter would deflect on the ends. I imagine the Redline cars probably are using multiple hidden mounting points in addition to the support rods. There really is no good mounting point on the stock 370Z. And because this splitter really does create a significant amount of down force I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry.

And yes, I do track this car. Mainly Summit Point but I will be trying to get to VIR this season. An added bonus is that my autocross club only classifies cars on weight and horsepower. This means aero is free. Might as well take it to its logical conclusion…

ResIpsa, I salute you on this effort and I agree, if you're tracking it, function over form any day of the week!

I’m thinking of going with an APR adjustable wing to balance the front down force.

reviving this thread, i was on an integra forum and saw a similar thread where this guy built his own front diffuser. it was strong enough for him to actually take a picture of himself standing on it. testing it out on the track, he learned that the thing costs him 8 seconds per lap. so he just took it off after.
