Thoughts about tow hook

What do you think? Rice or Not?

SPOHN 01-13-2011 10:07 AM

I wouldn't call it rice. But I don't see the point in riding around with it on.

Juruki 01-13-2011 10:19 AM

:P

ClemsonWill 01-13-2011 10:20 AM

Sorry, it's a negative. I'm all for having one on hand but no need to show it off.

ChrisSlicks 01-13-2011 10:56 AM

Unless you're on the track, rice.

370Z JT 01-13-2011 11:43 AM

I'm getting the same one but gold.

It's rice. We have a tow hook that is completely functional that comes stock with the car. If you ever need it, it would only take about 5 seconds to put on.

TongMan 01-13-2011 03:47 PM

I guess it's pretty split. It is functional, so not necessarily rice. I may get it.

wheee! 01-13-2011 03:55 PM

To me, it looks kind of a like a dude with one earring.....

nice metaphor!!!

chops 01-13-2011 04:38 PM

my nismo came with the tow-hook screwed in and showing through the front bumper. i think its because it was just barely taken off the truck, but regardless i havent touched it. too lazy. maybe i should put it away though...seems like a thief could walk by and unscrew it.

anyway...enough babble, dont do it!

wishihadnav 01-13-2011 04:53 PM

not a big fan of those..

fairladyZ34 01-13-2011 04:55 PM

i thought about getting one just to accent my wheels im gonna put on but its not a priority for me

CrownR426 01-13-2011 05:21 PM

I put my tow hook on so no one hit my front bumper when parking.
No more since i got my stillen license plate bracket.

TongMan 01-13-2011 08:22 PM

I guess the only modification that is not considered "rice" nowadays is a fully stock car with $5000 rims. Where are the creative people? Imagine all of us driving around uniformed with lowered Z's and Volk TE37.

fairladyZ34 01-13-2011 09:11 PM

do they sell these in gold? if so link please

TongMan 01-15-2011 05:52 PM

just do an ebay search for "tow hook"

fairladyZ34 01-15-2011 06:05 PM

^yeah i found them on ebay, i gave it a shot and ordered a gold one to accent my gold rims im putting on soon

TongMan 01-15-2011 06:19 PM

cool...mine is on its way.

RCZ 01-15-2011 06:32 PM

The car comes with one :)

TongMan 01-15-2011 06:35 PM

true, but not in the color or style that I want.

RCZ 01-15-2011 06:51 PM

Ah.

ZeeingAround 01-15-2011 07:58 PM

Just like what's behind my zipper, the tool stays covered until needed.

c41006 01-15-2011 08:02 PM

It is a little on the ricey side imo

Waiz 01-15-2011 08:03 PM

Don't buy the ebay ones, they just end up rusting badly.

Chip in the extra bucks for one of these:

Baer383 01-15-2011 08:12 PM

Not only is it rice but it is rice a roni:bowrofl:

fairladyZ34 01-15-2011 08:19 PM

at least its technically functional and not a sticker. although stickers add whp

TongMan 01-15-2011 08:44 PM

functional is not rice.

ZCarMan 01-16-2011 06:20 AM

I was hoping to see another choice in the poll such as, C: Its functional and I like it. That said, the poll implies the OP was curious as to what others think about putting a tow hook on the front. Keep in mind, IMHO I believe it is functional and if you are at the track every once in a while you don't have to worry about digging it out and putting it on. The great thing is not everyone agrees.

Yes but leaving it on when not in use is

bleufiend 01-16-2011 08:08 AM

Id pass and spend your money elsewhere on a mod thats more tastefull/functional, not saying that the tow hook isnt functional but like others in this thread have said, your car came with one from the factory that'll get'er done just fine.

:iagree: WHY?

lsxjunkie 01-16-2011 06:12 PM

Putting an aftermarket tow hook on your car is supposed to give people the impression that at some point in its life, it may need to be pulled out of kitty litter. If this is not the case, pass on the tow hook, poser.

If you do fully intend to HPDE your car, by all means, buy a tow hook. Or just screw your stocker in before you hit the track.

younter 01-16-2011 06:24 PM

Not a big fan of this..

Waiz 01-16-2011 07:47 PM

LOL at some of the ignorance in this thread.

Or you could just screw it in if you need it. Not like it would take more than a minute to do.

Skeeterbop 01-17-2011 08:26 AM

I personally wouldn't buy one unless i managed to lose the included one. I also noticed in the thread that was linked by Waizz, someone mentioned needing it for Autocross and closed circuit events. I understand needing it for closed circuits with tire walls and various other barriers but why for autocross? From my understanding the only things that are a concern are cones and i don't see why that needs a tow hook. I have yet to do Autocross but i would like to get started when i return from deployment. This has me slightly confused.

On the chance that you are in a situation where you can't get to it, it's better to have it already in when you leave the pits. You don't want to have to leave your car if you're stuck/broken on or just off the edge of the track to screw your tow hook.

You don't need one in Auto-X. Auto-X circuits are set up in parking lots. If you go off and/or your **** fails, the track workers (usually drivers from the other group) will just push you back to the pit area. It doesn't take much to push a car across a parking lot.

On a road course, if you wreck your car, break it, or end up stuck in the kitty litter (the pebbles in the runoffs that is supposed to slow you down before you hit a barrier) track workers are going to have to flatbed your car back to the pits. You may be 2 miles from pit lane at this point. They have to do so as quickly as possible because there are other people on the track. The tow hook makes for a quick and convenient mounting point to drag you out of the litter and onto the truck so that you get off the track ASAP and everyone can get back to racing.

Occasionally you'll see people driving around with permanently affixed tow hooks. Some of these owners do track days. Some of these owners want people to think they do track days. Some of these owners like to have a place to hang a dirty stuffed animal. All of them will have, at some point, bashed their shins on them while working on the car, assuming they work on their own cars. Food for thought.

You want to buy one? Fine. Leaving it in while you're driving around on the street, ESPECIALLY if you never do track days makes you a ricer.
