Very nice job.:)

Any special instructions for those that would be brave enough to attempt this?
Like warming instructions?

I set the oven at 250 and put them in on a damp towel for abot 8-12 min it is a lot easier than i thought. but very stressful.

Baer383 01-01-2011 01:18 PM

I also took mine apart today so I can take them to my shop and have the painters take care of the paint work.

I also heated the oven to 250deg then slowly pryed but it was stiffening up as it was getting cold so a second heat for 10 minutes and I could pry it off.

You def. have to be fast once they come out of the oven!! Also I recommend using a flash light to make sure you get all the lint out of the the light cover!!

Baer383 01-01-2011 02:22 PM

I got them apart I'm in the process of cleaning up all of the butyl tape so I can apply new when I reassemble.

SPOHN 01-01-2011 02:54 PM

I'm defiantly planning on this as one of my first mods. Not sure about what method of removing the lens I'm going to do. The oven does seem simple. Just got to make it seem simple in my mind.

I defiantly want the projectors to be color matched to the car, so I might also take those to a body shop. I got a few other things I need matched. But I wonder what I would be charged for a pint of paint?

When I got my emblems done (color matched) the body shop I went to charged 20 bucks.

And if I can do this mod anybody can. Good luck you can PM me if you have any questions.

SPOHN 01-01-2011 05:18 PM

SPOHN 01-04-2011 11:26 AM

Does it matter if you clearcoat these? Or is it not called for?

Baer383 01-04-2011 11:32 AM

If you are referring to the inside then no you can finish them anyway you want.

SPOHN 01-04-2011 11:44 AM

Ok. Thanks.

Matthew 01-05-2011 09:43 AM

THIS X10000

Its tough to notice little dust particles or fingerprints until you shine a light through the outside housing.

Nice job OP.

So I guess the best thing to do is put one in the oven first. When that's done take that one out put the other one in while you go back to the other to pry apart quickly.

I got them from the zstore but I took them apart and had them painted. I like them I will take some better pics for you. I did a satin black with the platic that surounds the "Z" and color matched the very outer ring.

Heated oven to 250. Large sheet pan with a damp towel on the very bottom rack. Insert first light for 10ish minutes or so and used some mechanics gloves to pull apart ( make sure all screws are out) it does take a little muscle but once it starts coming apart it gets easier. Also you can put them back in the oven for a few. It was really easy to do. Saved a ton of money and can now get new tires. Best thing I can tell u is make sur the light is clean inside before u put them back together. This will also take a day or two to complete.
Any other questions please feel free to PM me or post here.

Your are a brave man to take apart your head lights.

Baer383 01-11-2011 06:46 AM

for those of you doing this you can remove the chrome off the plastic housing with out ruining it,you use easy-off oven cleaner(yellow) top spray it on let sit for 1-2 hrs. rinse and repeat if necessary if done properly the housing will be clear when you are done giving you allot better surface for any paint to adhere.

Just thought you would like a tip:tiphat:

Check out my photo albums... :wtf2: You'll see the horror that is my door handle painting FAIL

I break down and decide to attempt to paint them myself... I live in AZ in 100* temps at night, so I'm thinking it will be fine to leave them on the balcony to dry. Let's just say I happened to do this the ONE NIGHT it decides to rain here... :shakes head: FML.

LoL Ramen. :roflpuke2:

True, MRWorks is expensive, but you can also recoup some of that with getting a core set swap done, then you can sell the other set and make some of that money back. Plus they can do the other mods you can't do in your home kitchen. :icon17:
