Hood Vents?

As anyone installed or thought about installing hood vents in the stock hood?

Are there any concerns that should be noted?
Like water on a hot engine?

i retrofitted GTR scoops on my hood before :D water wasnt a concern because it didnt go anywhere near the intake... the hot motor actually was able to cool off faster because it had a extraction vent...

Greg C 07-24-2011 05:26 PM

i made a template of the size needed to be cut on the hood then i flipped it for the other side so it would be even then i used a air die grinder with a cut off wheel... ;) took me about an hour to cut open the hood like that

spearfish25 07-31-2011 07:02 AM

Looks great. Water on the engine isn't a big deal. If you look at the Lotus Exige, there is only a mesh screen cover the engine...it's completely exposed to the elements. I'd love to do this to mine but I don't have the cojones to cut my hood.

eddieconfetti 07-31-2011 12:53 PM

i wonder how much this project would be if you had a body shop do it.

i dont think it should cost to much.... the only reason why i had to cut my own hood was no body shop on my island wanted to cut it lol

I saw a back 370z today with the GTR hood vents. looks really good in person

bullitt5897 03-14-2012 10:49 PM

We added hood vent to Andrews oem hood. Wasn't enough interest to make a mold. We were contemplating doing the same to my gtr style hood.

SPOHN 03-15-2012 06:08 PM

How come when there is interest we can't get it made?

If you have other projects going on that include hood vents, I'd be interested in more info.
I'm not looking for something extreme, but want to help with airflow.

bullitt5897 03-16-2012 09:52 PM

We are debating adding a heat extraction vent to a gtr style hood. But we will see.

jlitch 03-21-2012 01:15 PM

How are the vents held in?

Amuse370z 03-21-2012 04:17 PM

I've always wondered this, what happens if douches decides to dump a whole bottle of water into the vents?

I had an evo 9. Huge hole in the middle of the hood. Water would go in and after letting it sit after rain/wash for a few hours you couldnt tell it ever got wet. This was talked about a lot at evoM and everyone seemed to agree that the placement of the vent/and the materials use in the engine bay, water wasnt going to do damage.

EDIT: I havent washed my car since the seibon GTR hood went on....I am making a plan involving trays to catch the majority of the water that will enter the bay.

where and who did ur hood? I want to do mines like yours. How much to get it done? Anyone know a place that can do this in Houston?

cerruto 04-01-2012 09:10 PM

Hood, plus paint +|- 1000 dallaru.

zilverbullet 08-31-2013 01:02 AM

Thread revival..

Thinking about doing this but my main concern is, will the heat from cutting through the hood damage the paint and cause it to start peeling or cracking?

Also - which gtr hood scoops did you purchase. eBay has one selling less than 200$

Go slow and don't use a grinding wheel.

:iagree: You should also tape off the outer edge of your cut lines. Cutting a hood is not that big of a deal, when the vents or scoop you decide to use is in-place, it will cover any non straight cuts (within reason of course) with the flange of the vent on the top side of the hood. But the straighter the cut the better it will look under the hood ;)

I've had mine for a while now and I've driven in the rain more than once and haven't had a large amount of water in. Maayyyyyybe a couple drops, but nothing more than that.

zilverbullet 08-31-2013 09:25 PM

Looks good and thanks for the motivation. Now to buy the die cutter :)

shadow85 08-07-2017 09:38 PM

Interested to do this to my OEM hood. But would like to use Varis cooling bonnet style vents.

Anyone know where I can get a set that look lile those ones?

I used a dremel with a rotary rasp style bit and worked flawlessly and super clean cuts. Tried out several on a spare hood before taking the plunge.

Picture is potato and wasn't intended to show off the vents, but give you an idea of the "snouts" at the high side to let all that nasty heat out - and you could practically roast a chicken over the vents.
