Trunk Rattle?

Hey everyone, I have about 4000 miles on my Z and just recently I started hearing a rattle coming from the trunk area. The rattle only occurs when I go over bumps and to me, sounds like it is coming from the hatch area. Does anyone know what might be causing the rattle, or what I can check to see if they are causing the problem?

Thanks

I had this problem once, and it ended up being one of the tools next to the spare tire...I think there's a jack, a tire iron, and some screwdrivers. One of those came loose a little and was making some weird noises. Make sure those are secure.

My car had one too it turned out to be when I had the cargo cover in and extended it rattled so I try not to use it.

Mine rattles when closed, too.

i started hearing a rattle back there too (1600 miles)... my spare tire was slightly loose. i tightened the wingnut holding it down and no more rattle.

I took apart my trunk plastic to figure out what was going on. I had a few issues:

1. There was a loose metal bracket behind the rear most plastic cover. The bolt was loose enough to rotate by hand.

2. There is a lot of play in the hatch latch. If you can shut the hatch and still press down with plenty of play, then you will hear a *whump* noise when going over bumps. You can either adjust the latch, let the dealer adjust the latch, or put 75 cents worth of rubber washers in the rubber stopper receivers near the weather stripping.

3. The foam insert to the right of the spare tire didn't have the velcro wrapped around the spare tire. It left too much clearance for the top foam insert with the large cutout to flop around; it's supposed to be held in from the sides.

4. My owner's manual container was in the parcel box behind the passenger seat. It doesn't fit snugly and flops around when going over bumps.

One other thing I noticed when driving around trying to diagnose the issue is while I had the plastic out I had a noise that sounded like an occasional rattle. I thought it may be gas sloshing around (I had the plastic out so I heard all sorts of noises) and after filling up it went away. I'm probably totally off base on that, but that's what happened.

My car rattles now that I put two 10" subs in there, and over 1000 watts of power:ughdance:

I have a rattle from the hatch too. I had my friend drive my car while I poked my head back there. The noise was coming from the upper hatch area. When I pressed the plastic part up in the upper hatch area right behind the drivers headrest, the rattle went away. I think either the plastic is loose or something inside the plastic is loose. I haven't fixed it yet.
