About to go on a painting spreeeeeee
So Ive had my car for alomst a month now and i cant take it being "stock" looking. so i want to paint the front fangs, rear valance, and the spoiler black. now i dont have money to start throwing at a body shop to do it.
Ive only used a spray gun like twice and was only fooling around with it. Now how do you guys feel about rattlecan paint? good idea? Bad idea?? |
if done correctly they can look very nice. especially matte paints are easy to do, just keep a good 8-12 inches when you spray.
gloss is a bit harder as you need a wet coat at the end and requires polishing afterwards. |
Everyone on the euro scene uses Plasti-dip. People on myg37.com are starting to get into it as well. If you're painting it matte black I highly recommend you using this, because if there is any error you can literally just peel it right off. Google Plasti-dip.

In my opinion this is awful risky. Once you mess up the stock paint it can be very expensive to get it fixed the right way.

In all honesty, it will cost you more to have to fix something than doing it right the first time. The rear valance and front fangs are less of a risk since you could always buy an overlay to cover up your mistake, but I would have to say no go on painting the wing. You'll see your mistake in direct sunlight and that area sees a lot of traffic from closing the trunk. Even done by pro, rattle can's don't come close to a spray gun finish. I think a body shop would have to strip "your mistakes" off before they can apply new paint. I would leave the wing alone.

I played around with Plasti-Dip and the fact that you can f@ck up and basically just peel it off is really appealing to me because I am not the best painter. I missed that day in kindergarden.

Plasti-dip
So i decided to try the plasti-dip stuff and let me tell you it works awesomee. first i tried 3 coats on a plastic bucket and let it sit for a half hour and it peeled off with a bit of picking at it. and it was only two coats. so then after dinner last night i got to taping off my car and tried the rear valance. came out awesome. I did like 7-8 extremly thin coats and it looks great. only thing is that since its a little rubbery the paint sticks to the car and the tape so i got some rough edges in some places, so i need to find a way to get rid of that. but other than that it worked and looks great. heres some pics.

Looks good. Use an xacto knife around the edges before you peel the tape off. Just enough to score the plasti dip. Don't use too much pressure or you will scratch the paint underneath.

This stuff is great to see how stuff would look. because if it looks bad u can peel it right off. this is a bad thing for me bc i like to experiment and knowing that it will come right off.... my cars in trouble haha |
It looks like it came out pretty good. Let us know how it holds up.
|
looks nice, But Iam too scared to try it, call me chicken.
|
That looks perfect, almost exactly like I would like it to look on my car. I am debating on going with vinyl or using plasti-dip but my end goal is to have the fang and rear valence looking like yours.
