Never used V1 but I have heard great things about it. I have been using Escort for a while now. I have the older Passport escort. Their new 9500ix (with GPS) is pretty sweet. However, I'm tempted to try out V1 .

Does the V1 detect against radar, laser, and lidar?

It picks up Laser, K, Ka, and X. You can turn off X band, which helps since X band isn't really used much.

Another thing, the V1 looks really old and crappy in the website photos. It's really not that bad and MUCH smaller than the pictures make it look. It's only like 4 inches wide and 5-6 inches long. It's very compact.

You can't go wrong with pretty much any Escort or the V1.

From some of the stories I heard, by the time the detector alerts you, it would already have been too late. Is this true?

Your right foot is the best detector. Dont speed and you wont get a ticket simple as that.

Depends on the type. If its a laser yeah you're screwed. But most cops dont ride around with radar on in order to get around peoples radar detectors. Most of the time you're done.

So having a V1 or Escort is pretty much useless. I know that people say that they use the detector for other legal purposes, but most people know they have it for very spirited driving.

I wouldnt say TOTALLY useless. I know some people who have gotten out of a few with the V1....the cool thing is not only it tells you a cop is around but it tells you how many and points to the direction(s) they are. But yeah they could still catch you speeding even with one if they just flick their radar on....then it would be too late

Out here on the highways they sit around the corners and then get you....they RARELY ever leave radar on.

It all depends on the training the officer has had.
Here in Houston most just run around with K or Ka on all the time, but the ghost cars do not. They are the white dodge chargers with the word police on the side in gray; no way to see these coming. Plus side for us though is there are only a few right now, so it sticks to all the generic officers who run around with their radar on.

Not at all, you have to learn how to interpret the signals. For example, a speed trap is ahead of you around a slight curve. There is a car ahead of you a few hundred yards. When that car rounds the curve, and the officer "triggers" his radar, your detector will go off. You allowed the car ahead of you to trigger the cops response. You now slow down as you are aware something is up ahead. The caveat to this is, if you are all alone on the highway, and speeding, you will be the one that he hits with radar when you encounter him. Once you learn how to use a detector, they can save you many a ticket. I don't drive too fast for conditions, but the main interstate that runs through my metro area has a posted speed limit of 60 MPH. At rush hour, you'll get run off the road doing 60. They still set up traps trying to stop people from driving over 60. My detector has saved me quite a few times.

For the V1, if there's a speed trap with radar running, I pick it up 1-2 miles ahead...it's pretty amazing.

In my area, half the deputies' cars don't even have radars installed in their cars (budget issues? idk). The ones that do have them, usually don't have them turned on unless they're running a trap, in which case they leave them on.

GSP (GA state patrol) uses laser on the interstate in my area, so I only pick it up early if another car gets tagged. If I'm alone, as others have said, I'd be toast.

But believe me, the V1 has probably saved me a dozen times, and in most of those cases the speed would have probably led to an arrest (25 over). I know that sounds bad, but I'm talking country "highways" with 55 mph speed limits with miles of straight aways.
