Greetings, First of all, I am assuming that there is consensus with "radar detectors are legal in NY state". If someone has a DMV URL confirming this, that'd be great.

NY - Legal placement of radar detector
Greetings,
First of all, I am assuming that there is consensus with "radar detectors are legal in NY state". If someone has a DMV URL confirming this, that'd be great. Now, there's a law to do with not being allowed to mount stuff on the windshield if it comes in the driver's view (like GPS etc.)... so I'm thinking a cop can write you a ticket if he sees your "legal" radar detector obstructing the view right? [1] So is it okay to mount the detector really really low on the windshield, just left or right of the 3 dials? (Voltage/Clock/Oil Temp), does it satisfy the windshield law thus? [2] Or maybe, has anyone mounted it on the dashboard using those mats or double side tapes etc.? [3] I am assuming the popular mount to hook it under the rear view mirror still qualifies as illegal because of the windshield law, any experiences? |

I think you're over thinking it. No matter where the radar is mounted, I would rip that thing off as the cop is pulling you over. If the cop sees it, he/she is less likely to give you a warning or lesser citation. That being said, the most legal way to mount it is on the rearview mirror. It usually does not obstruct the driver's view and it is not mounted on the windshield. The mirror is mounted on windshield, but that's legal.

I put mine right next to the dials. It doesn't obstruct the view any more than the hood of the car does. It works like a charm in that spot.
On a side note I've been pulled over twice with it and got off with a warning both times.

People with the base model (no auto dimming mirror), and an Escort Passport (9500iX), which mount did you guys get from this URL - the stationary Z or the super Z?

I have the stationary Z mount and you will need the 23mm size. (I have the smaller/incorrect size [3/4"] and had to use longer bolts to get it to work)
I love the mount |

I was pulled over about 5 times in my 370z by local and state troopers. EVERY single time, not only I had my radar detector in place, I had it ON. NO tickets. They never mentioned anything about the detector. I usually drive in South Jersey and AC Expressway going Philly. Just slap it on the windshield and you'll be fine. However, I will share a story. When I had my camaro, after getting pulled over, I shut the radar off and put it in my glove box as I'm waiting for the cop to come to my car. WORST decision ever. Cop thought I reached for a weapon in the glove box. He came to my window with his gun drawn and had me put my hands out the window. Just act normal and tell the cop honestly what's up. Chances are he'll let you go. I'm going on 5 pull overs 0 ticket (knock on wood).

AK, I just got a big bunch of tickets so don't wanna risk it... in theory it is illegal to have the suction cups right? and it is legal to get that rear view mirror mount right? i'll just go ahead and get it..
I drive to AC on garden state.. how's the cop scene there? i've done that trip 6-8 times, not seen any action so far. so the stationary X with the 23mm... great. (looks very expensive though). |

Garden state is filled with cops (at least when and where I frequently drive) however I exactly know where they are . Even if someone try to trick me with a new location, well that's why I have the radar detector. However, when I'm driving by myself (late night or very early morning), NO SPEEDING. (in order for the radar detector to give you a head up warning, you need other cars in front of or around you. Don't forget that).

Honestly, ditch the radar and watch the way traffic is moving. Also, State Troopers usually have a favorite trap spot, so just keep track. Some people rely on the detector so much that they don't notice the police cruser following them for the past mile. Until they make a detector that can detect radar/laser beyond the line of sight, they really can't warn you quick enough.

Radar Detectors - Illegal in VA, legal in all other 49 states. Suction cups illegal? Huh? Stop now.
