Are you tired of EZ-PASS tags ruining your 370Z front end? If yes, then click HERE:

So here in East Coast, we pay a lot of tolls on our highways. So, many of us who doesn't like to slow down to pay toll, we opt for these small boxes called "EZ PASS". They are pretty awesome and I can usually drive thru toll booths without stopping.

However, there is a downside. They will ruin your front end look! I know many members don't care but these small things irritate ME. So, during the first 6 months of my ownership, I used the INTERNAL white EZ PASS box which ruined the look of my Z front (and unbalanced the windshield area IMO). Take a look at the EPIC FAIL

http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/s...DSC01475-1.jpg

So, I called them up (EZ PASS NJ) and asked them for an exterior tag. My initial plan was to open it up and mount them either under the dashboard or somewhere in the front fang BUT after some research (thanks to :google:), I found out it's against the LAW to temper with EZ PASS tags :ugh:

Here's how I drove the next 6 months ... FAYLE

I tried this way for a bit but it cut off my personalized plate :shakes head:

Finally one day, I came up with an idea. I decided to paint the exterior tag black and mounted it on the back of the license plate. I wanted to make sure it works in the toll booth. After about a month of driving and NO TOLL misses, it was confirmed that this setup works great and much more stealthy than before

What you guys think? I think it's much more stealthy. Members in EAST Coast, let me know if you have EVEN more stealthy ideas ;).

P.S. BTW I bought the cf front license plate cover from HERE . Three main reasons for using cf

a. It's VERY lightweight. So, it barely puts any weight pressure on the front license bracket (which is already weakened by other AWESOME NorthEast drivers )

b. It goes with my CF theme.

c. It covers the bottom portion of the tag slightly.

m4a1mustang 07-11-2010 10:03 PM

Win.

Thankfully down here in VA we don't have much in the way of toll booths. Though whenever I am driving further north I just borrow my boss's EZ pass. I just leave it on the dash.

spearfish25 07-11-2010 10:13 PM

Nice idea. I didn't even know you could get those exterior tags. In Illinois we use I-Pass mainly (looks like your interior transponder). JB1 painted his black and I followed suit. Now it's very incognito. Just get a can of spray enamel and have at it. Pics to follow.

I think you have crossed into a new level of obsession lol. Here in Texas we just have a sticker.

fullmonty 07-11-2010 10:16 PM

Very cool AK!

TongMan 07-12-2010 05:20 AM

Off topic: I think your plate is "RATED Z"

Jesse_Hunter 07-12-2010 06:37 AM

OFF TOPIC X 2: why do people blur out their plates? Do people sit around on the internet and run plate numbers to get peoples info or what?

I did it in a few of my pics, because everyone else was......

I figure if you have a vanity plate you might as well show the world. If you have regular state issued plates then I guess you can blur it out.

Osiris 07-12-2010 08:39 AM

Looks good AK. But here in FL we don't have front license plates....i need some ideas on where to put my e-pass. Was just gonna throw it up on the dash board when passing through the toll booths. We also have option to buy a sticker, but that has to go on windshield and it looks terrible from outside.

dropped1 07-12-2010 09:15 AM

Cool, great idea. I just hold mine up to the window when I need it.(which isn't often because I live in VA now )

kenchan 07-12-2010 09:30 AM

i just painted the backside (matte black) and attached to the window using black mounting tape.

you should just CF wrap it. ;)

370Zsteve 07-12-2010 09:34 AM

You should have just tinted the top of the windshield, AK! That also hides radar detectors. ;)

but tint will also impede the detector's performance...

did the same here.. the Krylon Fusion paint for plastic works well on these.

shadoquad 07-12-2010 10:46 AM

I too have an EZPass, the white box kind. I have an even stealthier solution. Since I didn't buy nav, I just stick it in the cubby. It still registers as I drive through, and since my Z is registered with the state of MD, it's not like they can b*tch.

I blur my plates because I don't necessarily need people to associate that plate with my car. It's a privacy/paranoia issue. And so, if I'm taking pictures of other cars, my rule of thumb is that I don't blur vanity plates, because I assume the owner bought them to show them off. But I do blur standard plates by default as a courtesy in case the owner is as paranoid about personal privacy as I am.

I only hit tollbooths twice each way to/from work, but I just keep my Sun Pass in the little cubby area and pull it out and hold it near the window going through a booth. It isn't the most convenient, but it's better than having that ugly thing attached to my windshield. My car stays decal, sticker, and Sun Pass free!

kenchan 07-12-2010 11:57 AM

i should try this inside cubby mounting for my Z. i dont usually drive my Z on toll roads so i dont have a transponder dedicated for it yet.

I don't even pull mine out of the cubby and it always triggers when I go through the booth.

mdbrich 07-12-2010 12:10 PM

Nah I think his plate says Balll Z

Mine definitely isn't that strong of a signal unfortunately. Even when I hold mine up, sometimes it doesn't register. It isn't the battery either, it's probably just because it's a POS.

KingDavid 07-12-2010 01:26 PM

It says AK 370 Z

hfrog355 07-12-2010 02:00 PM

I just ordered the CF plate frame. Stupid front plates in Texas...

In other news...does anyone know the legality of blacking out the back of toll tag stickers in Texas? Does it matter if they are visible? If not, putting this behind the plate or in the cubby would be great. These things look like trash on my progressively more blacked out Z...

3SeventyZ 07-12-2010 02:06 PM

Cool idea.
I just keep mine in the cubby and sit it on the dash when I go through the toll.
Works every time and I don't have to have it stuck on the windshield.

Really?? I'll have to give this a try next time.

TreyUT 07-12-2010 02:33 PM

Same here. Here in dallas i take the tolls so i place the tag inside the cubby storage without taking it out to trigger. Found this out when I got tired of it sliding off the dash or removing it from the glove box. Plus it is out of the way for thieves.

Reaper42 07-12-2010 02:48 PM

Did you know you dont technically need the pass visible at all. I have had my Ipass (what we use here in Illinois) in my Z for over a year, and also in my Jeep for 2 and a half years, and the passes have ALWAYS stayed in my glove box. I use the tolls about 8 times a day and I have not gotten one single ticket or missed toll bill whatsoever. And my Z doesnt even have a front plate. What happens is, notice all thos cameras that are set up at the tolls? wel those things take a picture of and scan your license plate. It files into the computers and makes the connection that your license plate number has a registered Ipass account and then just deducts the toll from there. I know this for sure works in Illinois for our system. Idk how well it will with the EZpass or other states. But its worth the risk of trying out and never having to worry about those damn ugly white boxes again :)

Hope this is useful to some people.

Do you have the chunky white box or the sticker? I am going to experiment with other locations to put the sticker I have.

I just hold mine up as it is in the center console.

I got my Ez-pass in VA before MD implemented it. So now I don't have to pay the monthly MD surcharge. Stickin it to the man where I can...

I could not imagine crossing the bridge over here that many times in a day since they just raised the cost to $5 and now require carpool to pay $2.50.

I was wrong, it actually works just as much as it does when I hold it up... there is just one toll spot that occasionally doesn't read mine, no matter where it is located.

ProfessorDave 08-02-2010 10:28 AM

Nice work AK, when you have a front plate to work with. Like others, I paint mine. On my old MINI Cooper I painted the EZ Pass checkered flag (matched the roof. Looks ridiculous on my Mazda 3 now!). When I get one for the Z, I'll paint it black and then paint a "Z" in white or silver on it.

Glad to see others find them so ugly in their standard issue off white!

crazyyankfan 08-03-2012 12:07 AM

Haha...just saw this interesting thread. I know exactly how you feel because I also use the NJ external EZpass. It is ridiculously ugly on the front license plate, which is already a sin itself to this car.
