I think it is important to keep these kits out of the hands of "replica" makers. Its not cheap to create a body kit and its even harder to make one that everyone loves.

Nothing like the "Real Deal Holyfeild", like punch to the face.

If the quality of the replica is very good, I really don't see what the issue is.

Wings West made a very nice knock off on a discontinued TRD elegante lip kit for the Celica -- it looked great, was high quality with excellent fitment -- also cost considerably less than the (again DISCONINUED, thus nearly impossible to find) TRD original.

On the other hand, I had an original greddy lip and that was a POS made out of plastic -- I would have happily taken a knock off if it was less expensive and superior quality

The Amuse kit may be top notch, so perhaps a knock off won't do it justice.. that said, these aren't "exclusive", just pricey.

Much of the cost of a kit that isn't simply mark-up, BTW, is the cost of the molds, not R&D. A really good company will not reuse the mold more than a few times to ensure each piece comes out perfectly.

That's fine, so long as the fitment is always perfect -- even the big names cut corners sometimes, and you wind up paying for the name only.

Also, part of what you are paying for is the import fee, not the quality or to compensate the manufacturer for his alledged R&D (was this tested on a track or wind tunnel or is just cosmetic??)... it's your money.

Of course, there are probably some sort of copyright issues, so I suppose you could make a legitimate case against knock-offs on the basis of that...

I'd love to hear what folks around here think of Rota wheels, which are well liked by autoxers and road course racers, but often dismissed as "cheap knock offs" by others.

Just a thought... are people concerned about "high quality" or being able to say "it's an original"? Fair enough on the former; on the latter... again, it's your money...

When you actually look at the part, it has a lot of details. Going to be hard for companies to replicate

Almost any thing can be copied but it's the details that sometimes were it falls short. Like fitment and cosmetics making it look cheap, and everyone seems to forget that there are copyright laws, so the fake will have to be different enough so as the company making them wont get sued.... That makes them noticeably different in some cases. but again some companies that have rights to discontinued parts do make a better then Original part in some cases.

Jordo,

You have a few good points, but the point is that what makes the originals so expensive is not just the molds (I am well aware of the difference in quality in a product after a mold has been reused too many times), but also the engineering and design. Yes you can pay cheaper for a knockoff product but in the end you are only shooting yourself in the foot. Every dime you spend on a knockoff means the original manufacturer doesn't make a profit on what they designed themselves. In the end companies that keep getting their products replicated can't stay in business. Then you as a consumer are left with limited options or shoddy products (without testing) from alternative manufacturers.

Don't get me started on Rota either. While they are cheap, they are horrible quality. True forged wheels are far superior to that of a mass produced cast wheel. I have had friends in the distributing business long enough to know that the typical Rota wheel has a 3mm casting variance.
