Using Black RTV Silicone to install exterior cf pieces?

1 Attachment(s)
I have never used this stuff so looking for a little feedback. How safe/strong is this Black silicone stuff to install cf Bpillars, fangs or other cf stuff? I am used to double sided tapes (or the new VHB tapes from 3M) but I have never used this. My box contained this silicone tube instead of double sided tapes (which I was expecting). If you did use this, any problem in the long run?

thanks

BTW, here's how the tube looks:

Only think i can tell you about it is we use the red version of that for hitemp jobs in and around the turbine engines on the helos i work on. Works great and adhears very well but its always holding down stuff the wind dosent hit directly.

Nice thing about sealants like that tho is they are very workable. Me being me tho and loving 3m tape like i do...id prob put a strip or 2 of tape down and then use that RTV to fill any gaps and keep things neat.

Just my 2cents tho! U could always just take one fore the team then post pics once its done :P

aah, that's a smart advice. I think I'll put the 3m tapes on the edges and use the silicone too. Thanks for your suggestion. I have been SOOOOOOOOOOO busy lately, I have parts piling up in my garage that's suppose to go on the Z last week! :shakes head:

Thanks

It came with 3M automotive double sided tape.

Silicone is not called silly-stick for nothing - you need to get good coverage on the leading edge (as far as airflow over the car goes) of the CF B-pillar bits and then cross-hatch to the rear edge, then press fit, and wipe away any excess - there should be instructions on the kit .. either damp cloth or some specific fluid will be called for, then I'd used regular tape to maintain pressure so that the CF pieces cannot "spring" away as soon as press fit is removed ..... I have various non-structural "bits" fixed to my race car with RTV Silicone and it has not come off in 18 years, despite regularly running at 140-160mph on the circuit.

As I said, not called silly-stick for no reason ....

Regular silicone holds VERY well and can be removed leaving no evidence which can be an advantage. If you want a silicone that is essentially permanent, use 3M 5200 Marine sealant. Nothing can pull that stuff off...I use it all the time when building my MAF tubes.. Available in Black and white. Be advised though that full cure takes 7 days, though it is pretty firm after 3 depending on heat and humidity. They also make a fast cure version (white only)

Sweet! I still haven't installed my CF B-Pillar pieces since I'm waiting for the INGS +1 kit. I'll definitely keep this in mind. :D

RTV will hold well, just make sure the surface areas it will be applied to are very clean. You can use ISO to degrease the surfaces and then apply the RTV and your good to go. I use this regularly at work for many things and haven't had an issue with it not holding, and like stated if you remove it it leaves little to no residue on the surfaces.

Do you guys recommend taking out the B-Pillar piece, attach CF piece with RTV, and press it down with books, or can we simply slap it on while it's still on the car?
