As I mentioned before, I don't want to modify the car. As I also mentioned before, I rarely use the ipad in the car. So why an I going to drop $1200 for a permanent system in the car?

If you have a passanger with you, then you're out of bluetooth, nav and music? That's not very convenient IMO

Have you seen our cubby hole? Its 2/3 the size of the ipad. Has anyone been able to mount it inside the cubby hole? I thought so!

um...........so it's a show car..... that you don't want to modify. ok cool :ugh2:

i think i know what you mean though, show car but in stock form. that's ok but putting in an aftermarket stereo, especially a really good one like the pioneer, is not going to hurt anything unless you are planning to show in "100% stock class" which is just boring:p

Well if it doesn't fit, did you consider other alternatives? You red nismo is way too hot to ruin with an iPad that looks way out of place.. in my opinion of course.

I pretty much bought the IPAD for the car. I initially hated the ipad like everyone else. Until I found out the IPAD 3G has a GPS chip. I was going to get a portable garmin for the car. I figured the ipad would do everything that i need in one unit. That way, i don't need a ipod, and a garmin. I only drive 4000 miles a year, so spending $1500 to install a double din head was not efficient for me. Until they come out with better mounting solutions for ipads, I just have to live with what I have. I still think my mount is better than the people that mounted the ipad on top of the cubby door.

Srsly though, who cares.. You're allowed to do what you want with your investments. At least this one is removable.. I do agree you could get the same functionality from a smaller iPod, but I'm a fan of ipads, I'm posting with one

Alot of negativity here. OP, at the end of the day, its your car. Install it the way YOU want it. Reminds me of the first Fast and Furious movie with a laptop in the Eclipse. Also, the Ipod Touch can be had with a true GPS attachment & a GPS app.

I know this wasn't a popular mod but I'm actually thinking of adding a carputer system with my existing Nav. Although I have no problems with an ipad, I would like to be able to add stuff like ODB-II support and custom front ends.

The proclip mount looks like the only viable place to add another screen since I have the Navi already.

RedNismo, now that you've had it on there for a few months, how is the mount holding up? Any problems or annoyances with it being there?

My current thoughts are to add a touchscreen to that location with the proclip mount and place the system under the passenger seat or behind driver's seat. The main issue for me is being able to remove that touchscreen monitor when I need to, which I think proclip has some solutions for that.

Another option for me would be to use an "ipad" like tablet that runs a real OS. There's a new one coming out called ExoPC but it's bigger than the ipad. Pros for that would be portability and I can use it outside of the car.

I'm a car enthusiast and a PC enthusiast so this will kind of bring those interests together lol

imo... i rather have a laptop mount instead... cause if its going to take that much space... laptops...

tsolin01 09-13-2010 03:59 PM

I think laptop or even netbook would be too big and the touch screen I think is good to access while driving. Tablet would be best I think but I'm not sold on the ones coming out.

That ExoPC slate looks nice but I'm skeptical of the performance but then again it's probably acceptable for use in the car.

Do you really need all this, especially while driving? It's def a cool factor, but at the end of the day, a standalone obd-reader would be a better choice. I'm sure an aftermarket nav/stereo headunit can integrate everything you want with cleaner results.

Yea probably don't need it considering I already have the factory nav. I've been taking a lot of long distance trips lately and I guess it would have been nice to have during those for the entertainment aspect along with diagnostics I suppose.

But I don't think it's a question of need lol more like I know i'll be sitting in traffic for an hour each day, this may make it a little more bearable.

someone here did a mod where they hooked up the nav screen to display diagnostic info using the OBD port. I can't remember the tread right now however.

If you want diag info, get HKS Camp II.
You can monitor anything the ECU gets, and it directly plus in.

Yea I looked into using the stock nav screen for this but it requires a lot more modding than I'm comfortable with. From what I've found from people that have tried on mp3car.com finding a VGA to RGBs converter for the nissan/infiniti stock nav screens is difficult. Someone did it on the g37 forum using some scan converter box and he even wired into the touchscreen interface. His setup definitely looked pretty nice though.

I think that's a little too much work for me and too much room for error.

The HKS Camp II looks pretty nice but I'd like more than just diagnostics.

Edit:

I found this guy's thread on myg37. Definitely nice but I don't have the skills or confidence to start cutting into the nav display.
