black fangs with 3M Tape?

Hallo everybody

In one month i receive my new 370z color PG, so the first thing that i wanna do is black fangs.
I consider between to do it with 3M Tape or to paint it.

So my question is, have anyone experience with 3M Tape black fangs?
What do you prefer? Tape or paint?

I haven't any experience with the 3M Tape. But i think it's easier to take it away after a few years.. And i heard the Tape looks good.

Thanks for your recommends!

They both look good. Painting the fangs would only cost about 20 dollars U.S. And the carbon fiber fang cover is around 200 dollars. It's really up too you, there are a lot of pics of both on this forum in every Z color just look around.

I looked around via the search function in this forum. But sometimes it's not so easy to find right information:icon14:

I found a lot informations about painted black fangs but i didn't find something about tape fangs.

I will check it again.

I think bats did a 3pc tape-on version. I think the painted would look nicer (if done correctly) or go CF by the370Zstore.com

OR buy a Top Secret CF front lip!!!!

Just be ready to shell out about $1200..... Although I think Intense has one for like $900...

as I posted earlier, Batsmobile had a 3pc vinyl for the fangs. I'm not sure where he went. He was(?) a vendor here.

If you want Carbon Fiber Vinyl.. Why not go for the 3M Di-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl and do some DIY? However, with the size of the fang, you'd probably need 48"x48" (or 60"x48" to be safe, I didnt measure it, just estimate off my head), and it'll cost you $100-130

I'd would be nice to see some pictures with a 370z..

Do you see a different between painted and taped (vinyl overlay) front fangs?
I prefer to put a vinyl overlay over the front fangs because it protect the original car paint and it's easy cancel it.

yah, check out the DIY section where tongman did his CF overlay fangs and rear diffuser from a plan 3M CF roll. tongman mentioned the fang was a PITA to cut and do, so if you're not handy with cutting and trimming get the bat's kit!

If you decide to paint, which is what I did, make sure you get the right tape. Regular masking tape won't get you the clean, professional lines you'll want. Taking the time to prep and tape will make all the difference in the end. People ask me if I had mine done at a shop. I just tell them I took my time with the taping. Good luck with whatever you decide!

title of this thread is funny. when someone says "3M tape" im thinking they're talking about black electric tape. :rofl2:

Back to topic...

I decided to use matte 3M tape, because if Im fed up one day with the color, I can just rip the tape off and use another one...or leave it as it is.
Both parts together, front and rear, did cost 100,- Euro, thats about 130-140 dollars, I guess.

The front was the most diffcult job, because I didnt want to break the lines from front to back (front to headlights, to bonnet, to doors, to rear) - hope you can imagine what i mean.
Taping the fangs in black completely does not look good, because it lacks contours - its just one big black hole. Very poor, imho - but a matter of taste.

Cleaning is very easy, just wash and dry, done.

kenchan 07-15-2010 09:32 AM

car looks like it's giving a double

1son2rue 07-15-2010 03:34 PM

Looks clean on the pictures. The matte 3M tape looks good.
Do you see a different to painted front fangs? I think the fangs completely in black looks nice and give the 370z an aggressive look. But its really a matter of taste. I didnt wanna do it by myself.
I will give it to a professional Caption Company.

Nice done!

Thanks, glad you like it.

No, there's no difference to painted fangs. You can't recognize the color as tape if you don't know it - or touch the borders with your fingers (small obstacle).
Tapeing it yourself would be a very hard job indeed, painting is much easier and satisfaction with the result is almost guaranteed - not so if you're tapeing it, because you definately got to know what you're doing.
It took the pros about 2,5 hours for front and rear to finish the job!

kenchan 07-16-2010 09:07 AM

with the available 3M Di Noc films i would definitely wrap it. works as a bra and replacable as needed when worn.

with paint you have to touch it up or re-sand/paint and it will take a lot more work.

i have to say though, that the duplicolor engine enamel matte-black i used on my dd's fog lamp surrounds have held up VERY WELL to chips and weather (including salt). if i had no choice but to paint it, i would use that paint for sure.
