Default 6mt shift knob change, new boot?

I'm considering swapping shift knobs but I'm curious what you guys did with the shift boot. The stock knob has a pretty wide base that flattens the boot where they touch. Is the stock boot reusable or will I need to replace it?

I'm considering a Sparco knob...anyone have experience with them?

Keep in mind, most aftermarket knobs mount with set-screws. I think the Sparco does. YOu may be happier with a dedicated threaded knob like the ones from TWM. (thead M10x 1.25) My weighted one with the pattern engraved is awesome and no finisher needed using the Redline boot. If you insist on retaining the cheap plastic OEM boot, then Z toys makes a finisher that wil work with aftermarket knobs...

Also, any knob made for a Mata will be the correct thread and pitch. Google Voodoo knobs:

The stock boot is kinda cheezy...

Here is the finisher and Voodoo shift knob Modshack is referring to. The knob is the "pearl" finish which looks really nice. I wish TWM offered a weighted knob in this finish!

I think I'm going to order a TWM knob anyways because they are height adjustable. I would set it to the highest height possible since I like longer throws.

I was just playing around on their site. Trying to decide if black faux-alcantara with orange stitching would be tasteful or not.

I was looking at the faux-alcantara but it looks like felt sheets from Michael's Arts & Crafts.

That's a big ball you got there, Steve! (BTW, I got your package yesterday.)

Thanks Steve. I'm actually looking for a more vertical, cylindrical shifter. I may go with the Nismo carbon-fiber, but I hate that it says Nismo. I do like your first pic of the oblong TMW knob. I just know it will flash-freeze my palm in the winter.

(I was going to ask you to post a pic palming your ball to judge the size, but I don't feel right asking a man to photograph his ball in his hand) .

i opted for a "suede" boot. looking how to make it sit flush w/my shift knob though...the boot is great though, matches w/the middle portion of the touring seats and the insert on the door panels.

...Thank you!....BTW, check the Voodoo site. They make some vertical ones that are a direct screw on. Oops...just checked and NO but there are other Miata knobs designed this way...

has anyone ever bought bride gradation fabric and made a boot with this? i think it would be a pretty cool touch for the car. It's pretty pricey but I'm sure you can make a few of them with the size it comes in Bride Fabric (Gradation) Inner Cushion Material - 100cm x 76cm - More Japan :: Since 2003
