Cracked...my boo

Dude, just noticed today after a car wash that my windshield has about an 11 inch crack straight down! It was last washed 4 days ago and it wasn't there. I can see the spot at the top where maybe a pebble or rock, whatever, hit the glass... just confused if it'll make more sense just to replace the windshield instead of a repair. Either which way..my heart hurts....I don't like my baby hurtin like this :( What to do...what to do?!!!

Sibze 05-30-2010 10:44 PM

Ya that big, I would go for new not a fix

P.S Weird title...

Zsteve 05-30-2010 10:45 PM

Was the car or windshield really hot? I hear that if you have a small chip, putting cold water on a hot windshield can cause it to crack out like that.

I never really thought of that... that really makes sense though!

Well..it was 84 degrees today when I washed it but I've never noticed a chip or anything til the huge crack today. So I really don't know what exactly happened. Just know that Nissan is gonna charge me an arm and a leg for this thing! Wish I could just trade it in for a different Z haha..but not so easily done

Have you considered using your insurance? When I had my windshield replaced (after 10 days of ownership mrrgh), Geico paid all but 50 bucks of the replacement fee.

Could be different in your state or with whatever insurance you have.

Most insurance plans have 100% glass replacement coverage. Speaking of which, it's time to get mine replaced. I have 2 huge chips in my windshield, plus 46k miles worth of road wear. I think a new window will help me actually see the road. lol

TreeSemdyZee 05-31-2010 09:07 AM

Don't go to Nissan for window glass. Take it to a glass company that is knowledgeable about replacing windows. I doubt that Nissan would even do it themselves. They'd probably send it out and tell you that they did it.
I caught a rock at the bottom of the windshield on my 350 and it cost me about $216. Some of the "major" glass places were asking about twice that much, so look around.

That hasn't been my experience. It's covered under comprehensive unless you live in a "replacement" state. I know in Kentucky, it is fully covered, but in Indiana, it isn't.

:iagree:

Insurance plans vary from state to state. That's why, in my initial response, I noted that it could be different in SophiaZ's state from my experience in MD.

SophiaZ 05-31-2010 09:50 AM

I wish I could just trade the car in and just buy a new one :) But my life doesn't work that way haha...I'm not ready to have a 60k+ loan for a 32k car LOL... I'm not happy about having to get a serious replacement like a windshield cuz I'm now worried about the possibility of a leak

TreeSemdyZee 05-31-2010 09:58 AM

Windshield isn't really a "major replacement". I've had 3 windshields replaced with absolutely no leaks.

SophiaZ 05-31-2010 09:59 AM

Good to know!

Trade the car in, after all your work? Perhaps more mods after the glass replacement will help that sentiment………….say perhaps super charger?

Where I live, it's covered and I do have comprehensive. :tiphat:

I was just suggesting to her that she call her insurance company to check up on that before contacting glass replacement shops.

nogoodname 05-31-2010 11:32 AM

Get the darn thing changed already....lol... Insurance will pay for it...done.

Trips 05-31-2010 12:24 PM

Sorry to hear about the Windshield, before you run off to the insurance, call an auto glass replacement shop, they are probably going to be cheaper and they can do the installation, if your deductible is $500 and the replacement is just shy of that no sense of opening up a claim, save it for when you really need it.

wishihadnav 05-31-2010 02:04 PM

^^this sounds about right...also one thing to remember is get the work done by a reputable glass shop..the front glass is actually an integral part of the structural rigidity of cars...it sort of acts as a brace..make sure its done right.

I'm just tired of this daymed black paint. Just had it washed, waxed, polished and all scratches touched-up and it looks like the paint is 1 year old again already! I trust my body shop so I don't think he used any crappy products. I'm regretting not getting it painted pearl white like my original plan. But, hey I'll live with it til I get up some more money saved up...and YES I'd love a supercharger but that would be last on my list.
I have the name of a glass shop around here and they come to where the car is and they'll fix it there. Which is awesome since I don't have to drop of the car anywhere. A pretty reputable place from what I'm told.....

WunDemDer 05-31-2010 04:45 PM

I work for Safelite Autoglass. Call your insurance first then they can transfer you. Takes them about an hour or so for the whole replacement process, plus they can come to your house or work or wherever.

Hope this doesn't get taken as an advertisement lol. I just repair chips and small cracks.

Safelite is who fixed mine. In fact, WunDemDer might work at the one where I had mine replaced, since he and I are both from MD. They did a good job.

1st off... don't call me a kid, okay? Only someone who wants to start drama makes an immature statement like that..especially when I just want to know if I should replace the whole thing or just get it repaired. ( BTW...I am 27..not quite a kid anymore) ANYWAYS.... I'm going to get a few quotes from repair shops and talk to my insurance company about replacement. If it costs, say, $600 for a new one and I get quoted 300+ for a repair..I'll most definitly get a new one.

nogoodname 05-31-2010 05:28 PM

It's just a windshield... things happen... no need to get excited.

SophiaZ 05-31-2010 05:31 PM

haha..I'm not excited..I'm upset :( I dedicated so much time yesterday to detailing it and at the end...see a freakin 10in. crack. That really sux. But still all-in-all..it is only a car... I just don't like imperfections..in any aspect. They get to me quite a bit

nogoodname 05-31-2010 05:36 PM

It sure doesn't beat having to repair a bumper four times at the same spot, replace head liner, replace driver seat, random engine glitches, airbrush repair to the clear coat, burn in pooh stains....goes on and on..... Stupid OB G37...LoL

Windshield is cracked and chipped too.

DarkPath 05-31-2010 05:48 PM

Check into getting OEM glass for a replacement. The insurance company does this for free or for small deductibles for a reason. There is a difference between OEM Glass and a windscreen that is shaped like the OEM from the manufacturer. It specs for size and shape - but number 1 it won't have that pattern in the glass in the area of the mirror. When you go to the shops for estimates... Make sure you ask if the glass will have that patterned area around the mirror.

wow, dude! What the heck do you do to your Z?!! haha...I know it's not funny but how did all this happen?!! tell people to stop touching your roof liner too! I hate that..haha I know that the bird crap eats away our clear coat..maybe going to a body shop for BETTER clear coat might help..I'm thing about that one

nicknick 05-31-2010 05:59 PM

Cracked windscreen, simple really. Insurance or get a repair company out to quote you. Is this more polite and non offending?:stirthepot::confused:

I'd prefer nissan to do it and have it shipped out or whatever..just seems like for a full replacement that'd be the best option since it IS from Nissan and not a body shop that puts on whatever LOOKS like it fits and has the same shape..I don't know..I'm so confused. I'll figure everything out when I talk to my auto insurance people tomorrow.

Never offended to begin with but I don't do well with sarcasm/ignorance ...luckily I'm on this site and have to be less mouthy or I'll get kicked off :stirthepot: But yea..I already know this...but everyone is saying that their insurance covers it in full. I understand this but I have a $500 deductable and have to get quotes to find out what's best. Don't wanna waste $500 bucks for a claim if it's not necessary, ya know?!!
