Disappearing Phone and GPS holder..(version 2)...>

I only occasionally use my Garmin in the car (trips), but I recently got a new phone (HTC Droid Incredible) which offers a lot of features that would be handy if mounted in the car...(Maps, Streaming Pandora to the aux in etc.) Dreamed up this mount that also does double duty and holds my Nuvi. Flips out of sight when not needed.

Now you see it:

Now you don't. Finally a use for the cubby!:
http://images56.fotki.com/v1599/phot...MG_2567-vi.jpg

Just a simple bent bracket on a hinge with a Nuvi compatible ball on it..
http://images56.fotki.com/v1599/phot...MG_2559-vi.jpg

Holds the Garmin just fine too:

Feel free to duplicate!

ha! very smart design. :D

im guessing that you have a nut holding the bracket from the other side, correct? not just using tapping screws? (i want to do the same but kinda lazy to remove the dash again).

FuszNissan 05-10-2010 12:29 PM

You have too much time on your hands Mod! :icon17:

Just self tapping screws...The plastic is very thick there so it's plenty sturdy..

kenchan 05-10-2010 02:20 PM

dang it, i can tell which nuvi is good to get. they all have good review and crappy reviews all in the same page (amazon)...

 any recommendations? (was looking at something like the 265WT)

IMO, Any Nuvi is excellent and basically runs the same mapping software. Only the features of the unit differ ... You can compare the features, by selecting the compare box here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134

Generally, as you go up numerically by model the features and price increase. Mine is a 200W...few years old but still excellent!

kenchan 05-10-2010 02:53 PM

ahhh, thanks modshack. :D

6spd 05-10-2010 03:02 PM

very cool for sure. since you have so much time on your hands, why dont you dust your dash and vacuum your cubby? just busting balls!

RCZ 05-10-2010 03:03 PM

Excellent work as usual mod.

m4a1mustang 05-10-2010 03:19 PM

Very nice!

simota1 05-10-2010 04:09 PM

nice mod!!!! freaking awesome mod... DIY please lol

kenchan 05-10-2010 10:26 PM

didnt get to finish today, but i did grab a low-end garmin 205W at bestbuy...

and made my bracket...

was a suction bracket thingie...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...14733-stud.jpg

found some bracket so bent it into shape...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...731-braket.jpg

fits pretty well...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...-test-fit2.jpg

what it would look like at the end... just a test fit. as you can see i can pull power from
my HU's USB if needed. i dont plan on using hardwired power.

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...4-test-fit.jpg

going to put the hinge on tomorrow and paint it matte black, add some EZ felt on
the backside of the bracket to eliminate any scuff marks to the dash when the cubby
door is closed.

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...t-yet-done.jpg

kenchan 05-11-2010 11:51 AM

not done yet... but waiting for the rain to end so i can spray this thing...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...eady-paint.jpg

needs quite a bit of screws to keep it from spinning when i move the ball joint.

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...ady-paint2.jpg

Modshack 05-11-2010 12:27 PM

Lookin good!

370Zsteve 05-11-2010 12:53 PM

nicely done, Kenchan! You modded a Modshack Mod rofl

kenchan 05-11-2010 03:32 PM

thanks, modshack. :tiphat:

370zsteve- thanks...yah, i caught the modshack bug. :D

i decided not to paint it thinking the paint might transfer to the dash material...also the EZ felt was a bit too thick to be used as cusion so i sanded down the bracket surface with 2000grit and made it as smooth as possible without making it polished shiny...

i had a little gap due to the bracket so made a little gasket on the door side...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...oor-gasket.jpg

and the hatch opening side...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...tch-gasket.jpg

no gap. :D

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...744-no-gap.jpg

very smooth...

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...5-finished.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...nished-far.jpg

thanks again modshack!

I just picked up one of these and plan to install it next weekend.

kenchan 07-11-2010 09:43 PM

Modshack- yah, I had 2 DC adapters laying around so just used it. :p

kenchan 07-12-2010 09:34 AM

btw, i only removed the shift trim and the decorative kick plate thingie in order to hardwire it to the 12v power socket wiring. i made a 1/2" hole in the cubby and snaked the wire through. finished off the hole with a grommet and black EZ felt for a OEM look.

didnt remove the entire cubby out... that would be too much work. :D

Hey Kenchen I can't seem to privately message you so I'm going to post this here, what are the parts needed to make this holder? Can you do a quick DIY or maybe just explain it to me because I bought a Garmin and like the idea of this mod.

hey jake- yah, ive turned off PM cause i get too many newb crybabies sending me waaaa waaaa :crying: messages when i post some joke about them. :icon17:

as for the bracket you can basically use any metal strip and bend it into shape. I used a small hinge like the one modshack used (can be had at art stores) and a tapping screw.

For the ball joint i cut off the arm from the garmin suction cup holder and screwed 3-4 small tapping screws throught the bracket. i think amazon sells just the ball joint with adhesive so you might want to run a search over there. :) the joint is pretty tight so you'll probably need to reinforce the adhesive with screws.

at the end i wrapped the bracket with DiNoc CF wrap. looks very clean. :p

GL!

ty very much. I'll post more questions as I am a noob when it comes to this.....

JakeZ34 12-06-2010 10:51 PM

Kenchan where did you get that metal piece from? I looked all over Home Depot and Lowes and couldn't find anything like that.

kenchan 12-07-2010 06:51 AM

Try your local hobby store. They sell metal strips by balsawood.

kenchan 10-30-2011 07:50 PM

bigdog- here's the final dinoc wrapped version. :icon17:

GREAT DIY! unfortunately for me, I'm not much of a diy'er when it comes to projects like this.

modshack or kenchan, if one of you have the time could you recreate this piece for me? I'd like to have one that will hold my iPhone4s and I will gladly pay top dollar for your help. if one of you wouldn't mind helping me out shoot me a PM and I'll send some funds your way. thanks!

kenchan 05-14-2012 11:02 AM
