Scraped up Sport front chin spoiler? Easy fix

My front chin spoiler was looking pretty rough and I finished it off today when I parked during lunch. Came close to the curb and the chin got pushed back and when I backed out I heard it scrape bad. I got pretty upset as I thought I actually scraped the bumper. Lucky for me it was just the chin. It was gnawed bad. Looked like complete crap. I know a lot of you have the same problem. But in the short time I have owned my Z it was pretty bad! It came with some scrapes when I bought it (must of happened during test drives!) I was thinking of just getting a new one, but at $140+ S/H? And this will keep happening! Well I decided to see if I could fix it. Thought I might be able to sand it down a bit and spray paint it for a cheap fix. Got some sand paper, 200 grit to start off. Sanded horizontally all over the chin and it really was working! Then went 400 grit. Did the lower part too and got all the shreds off. Got it all nice and smooth. Then hit it with 1000 grit. It looks great now! No need to paint! I even hit it with some armor all and this just works. But I know it will get scratched up again so I may have to do this again... Now I just have to be more careful!

edit: First two pics are not mine, but just to give you an idea of what it looks like. Mine was way worse!

sounds good, so do you recommend to just go with the 1000 grit from the start?

tjlazer 03-26-2010 11:27 PM

Not if you have deep scratches. If it's just some light scuffing 1000 grit will work and be better...

yah, i'd just sand it down with my file, cut off any loose bits with a knife, use a finer file to finish off and either paint it matte black or not depending on how bad it is.

Thank you for the tip! Very helpful.

Sweet, I actually searched for this before I started a new thread. + rep to you

Did mine today, I used a razor first to cut off the little black pieces hanging off and then sanded it down, then applied a protectant. Looks brand new, now I won't obsess about it scraping anymore.

Nice repair, the basic things to do to avoid some of the scraping is to approach steep drive ways at an angle entering and exiting, and paying attention when parking that you don't run the chin spoiler over the small concrete stopper in the parking space.

Definately, I now park like 1-2 feet away from the parking blocks. LOL The short wheelbase Z is great for that which is nice!!!!

I've given up on trying to maintain my chin spoiler. Its carbon fiber but I can eventually just get a replacement. I figure its the front line of defense on protecting my bumper but I know a few members can't stand a beat up looking chin spoiler.

Or just apply a few coats of plasti dip to it. I just did mine about 4 coats.
