Clear Coat restorer?
 

I was trying to sand down a slightly raised portion of touch-up paint I had applied. Unfortunately, I took off about a half dollar sized portion of the clear coat surrounding the touched up area. Does anyone have any product recommendations for restoring the clear coat in a small area like that?

Note this was not on my Z thankfully, so move the thread if you must, but any answers would apply equally to the Z.

Did you sand only thru the clear coat or into the color portion. Pics would help. If only thru the clear coat, you likely have to spray several layers clear coats (suggest a minimum of three). Next you will have to color sand (after the clear coat has cured) and feather in the area. After that, you will have to polish the entire panals to blend the area with the other clear coat gloss. Color sanding is an art, so if you are not experience, I would suggest having a pro fix the area. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I'll try to post a picture of the area once it's light outside -- not good enough lighting in my garage right now. I was trying to color sand. I used 1000 grit, but either the clear coat was extremely thin in that area or I didn't use enough water...

Thin Clear Coat
 

The clear coat is soft and thin on Nissans. What color is your Z? Do you have a clear coat airbursh gun and compressor? 1000 grit is too course for color sanding. I would suggest using 2000 grit soaked overnight in water with plenty of water first after the clear coat re-spray. Check out paint-u-cation DVD by Kevin Tetz available from Eastwood catalog (www.Eastwood.com) for the color sanding/buffing tips. Of paramount importance is not to rush color sanding.

if it bothers you enough, just take it to get it repainted and they'll paint the are and clear it all over again. best fix. everything else is temporary in my opinion.

Luckily it's not on my Z. It's on my Mazda 3.

Update: After a week of trying everything under the sun including touch up paint, those clear coat pens -- by the way .. those suck, and very fine sanding, I finally repaired the damage. I used a very fine polishing compound. After lots and lots of rubbing, the color was getting brighter and brighter and the area was as smooth as the surrounding paint. Then I used Nu Finish. I rubbed it in and wiped it off around 3 times. That did the trick. The paint surrounding the original chip is back to normal. Now I am back to square one. Ready to touch up the chip.

to fix the chip use doctorcolor chip. i use it on my G37 and FX50 works perfect.
