different color reflector strip when painting headlights

I've noticed some headlights that have dark reflector strips to match the housing. I'd like to know a little more information on how they achieve this before I do this

I'd like to know a little more information on how they achieve this before I do this mod (remove reflector strip completely and let the housing show? or paint the strip...?
