Rear Bumper in for painting

:shakes head:

So the dealer has my car back this week to repair the damage they did to the rear bumper paint job. They had applied the dealer sticker (I had told them specifically not to) to the bumper beneath the 370Z logo. When I told them to remove it, they did just that, along with a fair chunk of paint!

Needless to say, it needed repainting and the 3M clear bra needs to be re-applied around the wheel wells. I was not happy! They say they are going to have the paint exactly matched (Black Rose) but I am concerned it will not be an exact match and will look different than factory. I get it back this weekend. I will take pics of the repair (sorry I don't have one of the damage) and post them this weekend.

Anyone else have paint matching issues with repairs??? How good is the colour matching these days? I haven't had a car painted in a long time....

Here is a pic showing the stupid sticker before they removed it.

If they are using a Quality shop you'll have no problems. My car was repainted from the doors forward + the rear bumper and looks better than new...

Thanks Modshack, that makes me feel a little better! I haven't really seen the Monteray Blue up close though,... is there any metallic in it??

PS: Your ride looks sharp! Man I miss sunshine and grass!

No, but I have paint 'scratching' issues when taken in for oil changes.

wheee! 02-09-2010 12:13 PM

ummm.... okay, that's kinda scary! Your dealer is damaging the paint during an oil change or is this at a Jiffy Lube type of place? I would definitely talk to the service manager about that!!!

I plan on getting my oil changed at Lube-X where I can see the car being done myself. No monkeying around.

How much was that btw? From the looks of things so far I'll be getting my bumper and hood repainted a little further down the line then getting a clear bra. This NISMO bumper just loves eating rock :shakes head:

wheee! 02-09-2010 12:18 PM

Definitely get the clear bra! I have the whole front bumper and fangs, 24 inches of hood, A Pillars, 10 inches of roof, rocker panels, and front and rear of all wheel wells done. It is a godsend! I have it on my MKX as well and it has saved the day more than once.

vipor 02-09-2010 12:20 PM

I'll be getting the whole hood, bumper, fenders, a-pillars and mirrors. Don't want any lines on a white car.

Yeah, I forgot I have the mirrors too.

Whole fender and hood though? Yikes! Mine was $800 Cdn installed....

vipor 02-09-2010 12:27 PM

I was quoted ~$1,100

wheee! 02-09-2010 12:32 PM

That sounds like a good deal. I paid the same for the MKX and got less coverage....

Lottsa Metallic....and Thanks!...

Hey Modshack, I really like the look of wheels with the 15 and 20mm spacers. Have you had any clearance issues with the stock suspension??

I am thinking of ordereing some for the spring when the stock shoes go back on...

It's a subtle visual change but really improves the looks IMO. 15mm all around BTW, and No..No issues whatsoever..

Be carefull! I recently found out just how cheap dealerships can be. When I bought my car she had 2 scratches on the front bumber so it was agreed on at the signing that they had to paint the front bumper. I was told they use an expert who has done work on several of theyre cars in the past and he's very good. When I pick up the car it all looks pretty good but it was a very cloudy day and the rest of the car was dirty so it was a bit hard to tell. A couple days later after some bad weather I finally get a chance to wash the car.

MAN was i pissed at the results, it appears as if they didnt even use a paint booth theres pitting around the emblem mostly but other spots too. Worst of all is they didnt use the proper amount/type of clear coat so it looks dull almost semi-matte. I called them with all my fury but they say they cant do anything about it. Ill prob just end up getting it painted myself by someone I trust.

wheee! 02-09-2010 04:31 PM

Ouch, that is a hard pill to swallow. The shop they took my car to is a large company that does all of their (the dealers) work. So far all of their sub-companies have been great (tinting and clear bra for example).

The service manager has assured me that he will inspect the job himself and ensure it is up to par. I have warned them that I will not accept anything but "factory original" quality or better. The car still only has 132 km on it!

I winced as I read your post. How terrible.

My dealer is supposed to be the largest in Canada. They seem to have genuine concern for my car as well. The service manager personally delivered my vehicle to the 3rd party companies for the tinting and the clear bra. He also assured me that he would not let my car go thru any automatic car washes (they have one on the lot) while there. It would only be hand washed and detailed....

The screw ups with the delivery were an embarrassment to the guy and he tore a strip off the crew that did it. He made no hesitation in offering a rental car or a Z (if I did the painting in the summer) while they had the bumper repainted. He insisted that they would not try and "patch" the damage and that they would do it right. I am sure this is costing them a lot of money to do... even though I turned down the rental car!

wheee! 02-12-2010 10:41 AM

I am picking the car up tonight.... I am hoping it has been done properly. The dealer is detailing the car and resetting the TPMS sensors for me today. I guess we will see. I am taking the camera with me.... :icon14:

Well, I have the car back and the bumper has been painted. I wish I could say I was really happy, but I am too picky for that I guess! They left a couple of scratches near the hatch lid (very small, but I saw them!) and they did not have a new "370Z" logo to put back on so I have no logo for now.

It also looks like they ran it through an automatic car was or something though as I have straight lines/scratches running thru the clear coat down the length of the vehicle. They can polish them out, so they will do a complete wax job on it when they logo comes in.

Other than that, the colour match is very close and is hard to see if there is any difference. Again, sunlight will be the true test and we have none of that for now!

So all in all, it could be worse. Or am I just too fussy???? :icon14:

mick 02-13-2010 10:30 AM

sorry about the trouble you have been experiencing but your license plate is awesome :)

wheee! 02-13-2010 12:54 PM

:rofl2:

My wife drives the car and she loves it too! We see a lot of people pointing and smiling at it.....

dropped1 02-15-2010 04:24 AM

Wow, what a shame. Glad to hear they repainted, and its a decent match.

On a side note, be weary of having the dealerships "detailer" polish out their mistakes. It could come out looking worse, covered in rotary buffer trails/holograms. My suggestion is bring it to a REAL detailer.

wheee! 02-15-2010 02:45 PM

I trust the dealer to do it right as they are well aware that this is all their fault and they are trying to cover their asses here. They did a minor wax and buff (spot polish) while I was there and they did a good job

I feel your pain. Unfortunately IMHO it will never be the same! I am ALWAYS disappointed after body work. They just don't give a !@#$. I always seem to go back and complain and have them redo something. It never fails....

If I was you I would get a Fairlady Z emblem put on!

:icon17: I asked the wife if she wanted the Z logo or the Fairlady logo and she said she wanted the 370Z back on her butt! Her choice I guess!

wheee!,

I am picking up my Roadster today from the same dealership, I wonder if they will put the dealer logo in the same spot? I'll let you know!

Call ahead and warn them not to! It's such a pain. Mine is finally back home after the second return to the paint shop to fix the bumper for the small imperfections they left the last time.

Post pics when you get it!!!

wheee! 03-19-2010 11:37 AM

Here is a picture from Wednesday showing the car after the last retouching to the bumper. All cleaned up and fixed! Yay!

Now to NEVER have to go thru that again!

That's a unique color for sure and good to see you're all fixed up.

I had to bump this after reading it though....I bought from the same dealer and the sticker was already applied. I'm unsure what technique the dealer used on yours to remove it but I honestly think not heating up the sticker might work better for some stickers like this one.

I removed that exact same sticker from the same spot on my car after it had been on for 5 months! It was like 0 degrees in my garage the day I peeled it off. No heat, no adhesives, I just simply peeled each letter off and same with the little sherwood tree slogan. It took about 5 minutes. It came of perfectly easy. It left no residue at all, no marks, no paint removal and the clearcoat is absolutely perfect.

Maybe I just had good luck :ughdance:

Ken 03-19-2010 11:19 PM

Oh and where did you get your clear license plate frame?

Same here. The sticker came off real easy, one letter at a time. Just don't rush it, take it slow and easy and before you know it, they're off.

wheee! 03-20-2010 12:49 PM

Well, the dealer did it in the showroom while I was signing the papers. He had some kid with a heat gun do it and ruined the paint. I would have thought peeling it myself would have been easier with a little alcohol if necessary... for the paint, not me. :icon17:

I got the clear license cover at Canadian Tire for $10. They had smoked ones too.

370Zvetlana 03-20-2010 01:28 PM

oh god, why do those stickers even exist? how anyone in the world allows a dealership to put a sticker on their car is beyond me!

now if my dealership wants me to advertise for them, i think i would do it for $100 a month lol

Thanks I'll need to pick one up. The only dealer advertising on my car right now is the license plate frame....and to the post above, I agree. If you want me to advertise, pay me.

wheee! 03-21-2010 04:50 PM

Yeah, they tried to put the license plate frame with advertising on too.... they didn't get very far with that!

TalismanIII 03-21-2010 08:55 PM

There was no offensive dealer logo on the paint, just the license plate holder. I will get a clear holder as well!

I was too busy driving Fri/Sat to get any pics, will post some soon. What a car, I was gobsmacked at how it handles and how fun it is to drive. I was considering a Camaro but decided in the end to go with the Z. I made the right choice with the Z Roadster.
:happydance:

wheee! 03-21-2010 09:40 PM

can't wait to see it up close and personal.....!
