Map, Hatch, License Plate LED Lights from YourLEDShop.com. LOTS of Pics!

I ordered these LEDs after seeing the images on here and now that I have them in, I'm very glad I did.

The kit costs $35 even shipped. It includes a total of (5) 194-style LEDs.

(3) High-powered LEDs - (2) for the Map Lights, (1) for the Hatch
(2) SM (Surface Mount) LEDs - License Plate Lights

Installation is super easy of course. For the map lights, be very careful and pop off the covers. You can eff up the black plastic around the covers fairly easily.

Here's how I did it:

Here's what was included. Love the name of the packaging by the way :D

All the parts out of the car:

I took photos both with and without the flash so you can make better sense of things.

Note: The LEDs emit a slight glow even when they are off. I haven't had this be an issue as far as draining the battery or anything.
Also, keep in mind the Map Lights will no longer dim while turning off.

Hurry up and order yours! It's a small change that makes a big difference.

they sell em for the running lights in the headlights too?

vipor 02-04-2010 03:23 PM

Yes, there's a thread on that here already, as there is one of these. The guy did a writeup on both, I just expanded on it with more pics and such.

Search for "yourledshop" and you'll find his threads along with the vendor's thread telling you where to go to get them.

im waiting for mine to be delivered! good pics!

thanks for the pics...i'm sure we've all purchased LEDs from V-LEDs before, how do these from YourLEDShop.com compare? i notice from your pics they look to be better quality but what about brightness?

vipor 02-05-2010 09:47 AM

They're plenty bright, but I have nothing to compare them too. I'm not trying to get a tan from my map lights.

DIY for rear license plate replacements??

Edit: found it, 5 min task. Installed red interior LED's today pics to follow when I get a chance this weekend

I saw these in person last night... that LED for the rear hatch is wrong in my opinion.. It shines the light straight ahead, not at a right angle to actually light up the rear hatch area.

Something like this from v-leds would be better suited for the rear hatch.

that doesn't sound right. sounds like cheap bulbs to me.

LEDs do not emit light when they are off. Unless there is some florescent coating which may glow for a short time after, which I doubt.

The LEDs will not dim. This is to be expected. Diodes have an exponential I-V characteristics. Incandescent light bulbs are dimmed by lowering the voltage on the bulb since they have a linear I-V characteristics. Therefore, if you install LEDs, they will dim ever so slightly and turn of abruptly after that. Anyone with an illuminated kick plate can experience this themselves by holding the door switch with their fingers until the lights dim off and see how the kick plate light reacts to dimming.

This is my main reason for not wanting to change the map light bulbs. But the license plate and trunk lights are useful!

you know i'm like 90% sure the ones I have in the Z dim still. I'll check when I get home today. They are Luxer 9-led arrays.
Not where I bought them from but its these here:

Please let me know how much they dim. Maybe they have a relatively large resistor in series. But even so, they shouldn't dim as much as the regular bulbs. They will turn off abruptly.

Just checked my lights from YourLEDShop.com. They do fade for a short amount of time, but then they do just simply cut off. Personally I don't really care, it isn't too noticeable really. The lights look great overall. Did Map, Hatch, License Plate, and Parking lights.

i used the biggest LEDs for the front headlights and I love it. did medium sized ones for the interior light and like the soft white look. I actually bought red leds for the plate lights since everyone's doing white licence plate lights here. but right now they're back in the box cos I've gone for the undercover no-light in plates look..

This is what YourLEDShop said about using the "big" LEDs for the parking lights:
Quote:

The high powered LEDs are very sensitive to heat. If you put them in the headlight housing, they will burn up really quick, that's the reason we sent smd ones. We learned it from our experience.

vehl 03-06-2010 05:58 PM

^^ well, when i said biggest leds, meant biggest led i found at that shop. which is basically just 9-led so its not as big as any of yourledshop's biggest leds.
