Z1 Seat Rails - removed planted rails

Hi Z fans.

I just wanted to relate that recently I traded my planted seat rails for the Z1 seat rail mounts. It was well worth the effort in my view. The side mounts by Z1, see Link: Z1 Seat Rails for the 370, are superior in the fact that the side mount seat rails mount lower in the car to start with and are alot less of a fuss to setup. You should buy at least one hardware kit when you pickup your rails. It'll be good enough for both sides of the car. I first swapped out my factory seats for Sparco Evo XL QRT seats and tried to make the Planted mounts work along with the Sparco side mounts. This forces the seatbase to start out 1.5" to 2" higher on both sides of the cabin. If you use a slider, even more. Well if you track your car like I do then every inch of headroom is precious. Swapping to the Z1 seat rails gives you back the room you need on both sides of the car for adequate helmet clearance be it a passenger or DE instructor.

Sorry for the sideways view of the second image. But the real indication of success is the lower front right part of the seat. It sits quite a bit lower with only one seat mount needed instead of two or three.

PM me if you have questions or want to see other images. I'll take more pictures if you need me to.

NOTE: The hardware spacer count on the door side rear mount is key. You only need them in this one location on each side of the car, no other location requires them. One larger inside and one medium outside the Z1 rail. But only in that location on each side of the car.

Good to know it works on the EVO XL
Z1’s listing says its only up to 465mm wide seats and i thought the Evo Was wider

A better picture comparison of the difference between the Planted mount and the Z1 Mount from the passenger side of the cabin.

The dimensions of the Sparco EVO XL QRT

Regarding the size of the seat I have from Sparco.

See the chart, Not sure if this dimension info helps, but I am using the largest seat they sell with this Z1 Mount and it works just fine. Props to Z1 for creating a workable seat mount system for side mount seats. The hardware kit is critical in helping to adapt these mounts to fit your seat. I ordered one just in case and I am glad that I did.

I’ll be using a Sparco Evo II which is listed at 535mm so it should work

I would be interested to see who else has used these side-mount Z1 seat rails to mount seat in their Zs. Post your pics here. So far I am very happy with the results.

I had my Evo II seat mounted to a Wedge Engineering seat mount and had to ditch the rails. I bought the Z1 side mounts for the passenger side and will be fix mounting the passenger seat. I don't like sliders for a track car unless OEM. Just my two cents. I do like the simplicity of Z1 mounts. My driver's is a custom mount but if I don't like it I may go with the Z1 side mount.

Do you mind telling us how tall you are and what sort of head clearance you are getting with a helmet on.
Also does your sparco seating position sit lower then oem seat. Reason im asking as im 6"2 and looking at getting a set or seats so i can fit in the car with a helmet on. (Tall ppl problems)

I am 6'1" and have a long upper torso. With the Wedge Engineering bracket I was fine without the seat rail. The Z1 seat bracket should sit even lower.

Hey I am 6'2" as well. The single mount option offered by Z1 lowered the drivers seat by about 1.5" to 2" and the passenger even more(no slider). I'll measure the precise amount of clearance I currently have with the new mounts from Z1. I was using the planted mounts along with the Sparco Side rails. It seems to be lower to my view. The change in height is noticeable because I have to work a bit harder to see curb lines when turning sharper to avoid the potential for curbing my rims. I'll update this thread again shortly.

Nice to know.
I actually have a set of buddy club rails on order right now.

Return them! Others have issues with getting their seat to sit straight and they can be a little wonky!

3/4" to 1.5" clearance.

Ok guys, I have measured the clearance in the driver's seat with my helmet on and the race belts secured. I have about 1.5" clearance to the headliner from my helmet crown. For me this is about two fingers width. Depending on how I tilt my head forward or back it can drop to 3/4", still quite roomy for a track day appearance. I did not measure the passenger side for clearance but will update this thread with the same information as I have the helmet with me today. I expect it might be similar to the drivers side clearance. Details to follow.

What variety of pictures would you like. Let me know and I'll get them together.

I’m 6’2” and wonder if these would enable me to clear the “broomstick test” in my roadster…

Corsairprime 02-03-2022 09:58 AM

Ok, I did the same fingers above the Helmet test on the passenger seat. The clearance measurement for me is the same as the drivers seat. I get 2 fingers above the crown of the helmet. Two fingers translates to 1.5" at a maximum to the headliner in my Z. You definitely sit lower in the car. It is interesting to note without the helmet, I'd say there is about 3.5" to 4" from the top of my head to the headliner. It feels very roomy for a car with racing seats and 5 point harnesses.
