What are these things?!!!

There's a little square next to the fangs on both sides. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and what are they? They don't seem to serve any purpose since

There's a little square next to the fangs on both sides. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and what are they? They don't seem to serve any purpose since they're closed. Good spot for fog lights..or go NAY on that idea?!!
