Short Shifters?
What do you guys think of short shifters? Ive heard some flaws about it like "oh it'll ruin the synchros will go bad" blah blah. I don't see any flaw in it at all. Was wondering which brand to really go with. Any advice?

Coolerworx is the best, but expensive and apparently difficult to find in stock Stateside (Soho and 9K Racing carry them). It's available from Coolerworx directly, but you'd end up paying more just for the piece not to mention shipping from overseas (UK). TWM would be next in line however it's been said recently that their order fulfillment if iffy and customer service is almost nonexistent. Not sure how valid that is, but something to be aware of.

Coolworx have some issues that SOHO isn't happy with. And they are not going to order anymore until the issue is fixed. |
A short shifter in itself will not make the synchros go bad.

I noticed my 5th gear synchro having some issues around 20K miles. I picked up a TWM short shifter around 40K miles. At 100K miles now and the 5th gear synchro issue is no worse than it was before the install. |
Having had both the TWM Performance shifter and Coolerworx shifter before I would say they are both excellent quality shifters to use in your Z and made a big difference comparing to the stock Nissan OEM shifter. Everyone’s customer service experience with vendors can always be different. I had a good experience dealing with both TWM Performance and Coolerworx. For street duty and track duty I would say the Coolerworx shifter was a huge improvement and provided positive crisp shifts using the Coolerworx shifter although it can be hard to find and expensive but worth it. As far as the synchros it can be a variety of different reasons why synchros can possibly go bad. I have found inexperienced driver error and not servicing your manual transmission on time flushing and refilling the transmission fluid on time to be common reasons for catastrophic synchro failure.

Also driving with your hand on the shifter all the time. you don't realize it. But that preloads things inside the tranny. It's a big issue with the truck guys with the G56 manual tranny.

Coolerworx could take off if they could lower the price just a little and get on top of fixing the simple issues of baseplate and user choice of shift knob. I believe their focus is more toward other makes than ours and they should be rather motivated to address the issue and ramp up production considering the coolerworx unit is remarkably similar to UAE and a few other shifters for other makes. If someone with a CNC lathe got industrious on this side of the pond the concept might get interestingly a bit less hard on wallets.
