paint touch up steps?
I have a few nicks on the front bumper and was considering touch up paint. Does anybody have any suggestions on doing this? Should i use the oem touch up paint then clearcoat?

I've got a chip on the edge of my hood near my headlight - I'm debating how I'll handle that one. Probably just micro-fill it with touch-up, then put a few layers of clear on it once it's leveled off...though after that, I don't know if I'll attempt a light wet sand /finess pad, or leave it alone. Depends on the results... Or, I might just wait until I have about a dozen more, then have the hood done by a body shop. As for my front fascia, I have several nicks from rocks and other crap, I have a black car, the fascia is flat black - so it doesn't really show up. That one will be a wait and replace kind of deal. |
It's very difficult to do. If you have the patience, try buying a very fine artists brush at a hobby store, then apply VERY small amounts of paint over a few hours. When I say VERY small, I mean it. Layer it in small increments. Then a couple of very small clear applications.
Otherwise, do what Kannibul said above, wait for the inevitable and when 10 or so nicks have appeared, bring it to a reputable body shop. |

Edit: wow that's an annoying Title for a site. |

langka is your friend if you are anal.
i just clean the chip with alcohol, apply oem touchup using a toothpick. just tap the toothpick on something hard and let the tip bend a little. put a dab of touchup on something and use your toothpick to apply. it's a great applicator. reapply as necessary until it's pretty even with the surrounding paint. let dry 2weeks and if you have a sanding block use 2000grit and wetsand or you can just leave it alone. wax afterwards. |
