I love this forum. I go to bed, I have a nice little sleep, I wake up, I make myself a nice cuppa, I turn on the computer and...

...2,349 new suggestions. Sadly...

...My kids have left home, so they're not to blame, my spare fob is in 'the secret place' and has never been used by anyone, least of all the wife, who hates fast cars and only ever goes near mine when she has to (conspiracy theories here, please).
I can't unplug the seat. If I did that, I wouldn't be able to make those tiny adjustments we know are so necessary.

You people have made me laugh out loud with some of your thoughts - thank you for them. Sadly I'm no nearer a solution. Part of me hopes that Seat Creep has not been heard of before. I'd love to be the proud creator of a new issue, 10 years into the car's history. Hopefully it could be named after me, like a new species of butterfly, or a disease.

Maybe get one of those Dashcams that record on movement and have it facing inside the vehicle. might be able to catch the ghost or a wifey that is rippin' **** up on the roads while you sleep

i think it's gremlins, probably at night when you're asleep. too bad Nissan didn't think of having memory settings. on my bmw which was 10 years older than my z, it had 3 different settings for 3 different drivers. when you found your sweet spot you'd press one of the buttons and hold it in and the memory was set so if someone adjusted it on you, all you had to do was press your button and the seat would automatically adjust to your personal setting. and that just wasn't forward and back, it was also for height and lumbar. maybe in 10 more years when the next generation z comes out.... come on Nissan get with it!

Oh my goodness!

I think I may have the evidence of The Seat Creep I've been testing for (feels like I've spotted the Loch Ness Monster)...

As you can see, the right hand side of the tape has moved considerably (the two RH sides were level, until this morning).

What's interesting is that I'd noticed no movement at all ever since I put the tape on, over a week ago. But yesterday, when I was leaning across the car, doing the vinyl roof wrap in my garage, I kept accidentally locking/unlocking the car because the key was in my pocket.

I DID NOT get into the car. I DID NOT accidentally touch the seat button (I'm in the UK, my car is RHD, so the seat button is next to the gear shift, not on the outside). I finished the roof wrap late at night, so I left the car in the garage overnight, unlocked, with the windows down.

Got in the car this morning, to reverse out of the garage, and noticed it felt different. Looked down at my tape - and you can see what I saw.

Ooooer!

Now, I'm as sceptical as the next man - and I can hardly believe my eyes, but the evidence is there, I think?

Any ideas how it's happened? Should I try replicating the movement by locking/unlocking the car several times again?

I'd reset the tape and try again. Not sure how locking and unlocking could possibly move the seat without some weird electrical gremlin. But if testing it out helps your sanity, I say go for it.

One other thought ...

( Click to show/hide )
Do you ever let the seat creep more than once without correcting it? I know you have corrected enough that it would be way further back, but if you had just never corrected it, I wonder if it would continue to creep backwards.

For example, I have a motorized tv mount that is almost 10 years old and is no longer able to hold a precise position for more than a few days. I can set it and leave it hanging out from the wall, but after a few days it drifts to the left noticeably - but it just drifts those few inches and never any further. I can adjust it back to the original position using the remote and it stays for a few more days before drifting again - if I leave it after the drift it will stay in that position for months. I wonder if you're experience something similar with your driver seat (mechanical wear?).

PROOF OF BIGFOOT.

I agree with others, see if it keeps drifting... and/or reset and see if it keeps repeating. MOAR DATA!

That being said... at least the evidence suggests that you aren't a complete crazy.

It creeps forwards, not backwards.
If I let it continue to creep my face would smash through the windshield (joke), so I've always set it back. At the very least it would be uncomfortable to drive - and possibly dangerous.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions and support, guys. I shall continue to collect data. I've repositioned the tape and now that it's stopped raining I'll go outside and lock/unlock several times, on both doors, to see if anything happens.

Oops.. I misread that. But yeah, obviously I'm not suggesting that you be unsafe in your attempts to diagnose the situation. If you can get it to do it at least twice, that would be good data. That is, assuming it doesn't go from perfect position to unsafe in one "creep". To me, it doesn't look like the tape moved that much.

But if you need to, maybe, you start with the seat just a bit farther back in your testing to allow for that second "creep". This might not be too bad since you don't have to deal with a clutch pedal.

It moved 0.6 of an inch. Even a small amount like that is sufficient for it to feel wrong.

I've just tried locking/unlocking the car several times, but the seat didn't move, so I'm counting that out, partly because it's crept forward in the past without me locking/unlocking the car a lot. I'm starting to think that the seat switch might be faulty, making an occasional contact somehow.

I've started making a time/date/movement chart in Word . Still got 2 years warranty and I know how Main Dealers like evidence!
