Default EVO-R F1 Mirrors leave a gap for water to get in?

Just installed a set of these, kind of concerned about the 1/2inch worth of gap between them and the weather stripping on the door. The stock mirrors have that plastic trim piece behind them, I tried getting it off to fit behind the evo-r's but I'd have to grind down some stuff on them for them to sit flush.. am i supposed to use these? It didnt seem like i was. but i feel like water can get in that gap.

I'll take a pic tomorrow
