Its funny that this came back up while I'm on my lunch break.
So my rattle issue continues but I found a major culprit. It appears the previous owner of my Z somehow bent down the heat shielding that is right at the Y pipe. it was bent down and touching the top of the Y pipe. It was actually worn through in some places where the constant vibrations had beaten away at the metal. After discovering this, I bent the metal shielding back upwards to its original position and went for a drive. THE SOUND WAS GONE....for about 2 gears worth of a pull and then the metal bent back down onto the Y pipe. This explains the hot cold issues where the rattle is worse in the winter because the metal contracts and ends up bent back down where the "memory" from being bent there for so long is stronger than the "original" location. I have looked on the parts fische in every section that I can think of and cannot find a place to order that specific piece of heat shielding. This has kinda been on hold as I have been working in Missouri for 6 months and seem to be always busy. Will visit the dealer back home when I'm finished here because the one here was even less friendly (which I didnt think was possible) "Oh yeah we don't normally work on modified cars"... Anyways in the time of silence between that metal rattling I have heard other little rattles developing, I am almost at 70,000 miles so I guess it is just a factor of time that stuff will start coming loose. @dmarando I haven't checked this area and I will definitely take a look there!

I had a rattle in my old Firebird that drove me nuts for years. It turned out to be the rear license plate. Only when I put on a chrome frame did the noise go away.
Also, I was getting a buzzing sound from interior of the Z for a few years and I finally found that the clip for the garage door opener (on the sun visor) was loose. Once I tightened it a little, the noise disappeared. Somethings are so simple, yet a bear to find...

I just spent a month tearing my car apart trying to fix this. It started after I installed the AAM Resonated Short Tails. The exhaust sounds so good but the rattle was ruining the entire experience for me. I was very close to going back to the stock Nismo exaust. I made a video about it on my YouTube channel in which you can clearly hear the rattle and how I finally fixed it. Hopefully it helps someone.

Guys, I am not trying to pimp my youtube channel here but after making my first video on the rattles, it happened again. This time I tore everything out of the back and started over. I finally found the source which was the motor that opens the hatch. I have read ALL the threads here regarding hatch rattles and tried alll of the suggestions. No one has mentioned the part I am talking about so hopefully this helps someone who may be going through the frustrating process of tracking down their rattle with no success. It’s the most boring video on earth so feel free to skip to the last 5 minutes or so to see the part I am talking about and how to fix it.

Today I went down the rabbit hole and quickly realized the source of annoyance wasn't going to be as obvious as I hoped to be. Then, I came across your video, and voila!!!!! We have the exact same problem. I threw some goo silicone lubricant on the gears (I also needed to do the same for the little metal one), and the noise went away. I also removed the trunk weight. Thank you for sharing your relentless journey in locating this noise This has annoyed me for years!!!!!
