Love or regret

I just got my z a couple days ago. I know when modding a car it might sound like a good idea at first but after a while you might start to kick yourself. My old car was a sonic so it has enough hp for me...for now. So I was going to start with some visuals. But I wanted to get a feel for what some people have done and love.

A lot of people who go forced induction regret buying bolt-on mods because they're mostly useless.

If I had to do it over, a tune (for that terrible stock throttle lag plus additional fan control) and RJM clutch pedal assembly are the first two mods I would have done.

dkznyc 10-03-2016 03:30 PM

Turbo install when oil pissed in my turbo..smoked everywhere - felt regret..
installed air suspension and air leaks.. - felt regret.
installing a OEM master clutch master cyl , its soggy after a year - feeling regret now, going to but the rjm version.

Just giving myself more stuff to worry about... - regret
stock is so simple

I can honestly say I fell in love with my car all over again when I went TT.... but make sure you buy a quality kit and get/do a quality installation!

Raidernation 10-03-2016 03:55 PM

Op first figure out what you want to do first and set a budget. Then multiple that budget by at least 2. IMHO using the search button will help you more than asking for peps opinons on mods. One piece of advice is don't cheap out on parts. Buy once and cry once. A good cheap first visual mod is tinting the windows. A good first mod for your suspension is a stiffer front sway bar. Have fun man.....

Widdzz 10-03-2016 06:31 PM

Bolt on advise is huge, because I do plan on going tt. So I'll probably just get a tune. But my previous car was a chevy sonic with 2 jlw3 on a 2600 amp. Alpine speakers all around, so I don't know if the speakers are quite stock or of I just need to adjust haha.

Congrats on the new car!

If you plan on going forced induction, be sure to budget for all of the supporting mods you'll need (upgraded clutch, gauges, oil cooler, fuel system upgrades, etc.). It all adds up so quickly!

nis350 10-03-2016 10:27 PM

get some nice wheels and lower it with Swift's.

I've thought about that, I live in omaha and the roads here kind of scare me haha. Maybe a skid plate, how well do those actually help? But I had to drop the car off at the dealership to fix some things under warranty. In the mean time the gave me a base versa for a couple days, and it's speakers put the z's to shame xD

:iagree: Budget at least half of the cost (new) of the kit for supporting mods and tune. That's not including the 20-30 hours of labor for the install on a TT kit.

That should be your first purchase, followed by sway bars.

The only thing I regret is going to a popular local audio installer, they did such a messed up half assed job I am still having weird electrical issues 5 years later. Almost everything has been replaced that could be found so I hope that's behind me now. I should have done my research beforehand and drove a bit further for a professional shop.

Doing your own Research, Planning and Budgeting will save you time and money in the long run.

That's rough man, I interned at my local audio shop so I know what I'm doing but I still wouldn't feel comfortable doing it on my own. I like being able to blame someone else when something goes wrong haha.
So far on my list I got a skid plate, sway bars, tune, and going to black everything out.

I assume this was from a bad splicing job? I don't really understand why this happens... I've installed a few car audio systems in my time and I have never had to cut or tap the factory harness.

Bad splicing plus about a hundred other things, like connecting all ground wires to the head unit but not grounding the head unit. If a wire was too short they would just connect more wires till it was long enough, if a wire was too long it wouldn't be trimmed it would just be stuffed behind a pannel. And about a hundred other things that would just take too long to mention.

I guess I should throw this out there, but since the op has no info on his car - Buying a base model and making it a turbo = regret

Not for the rev match, but for the brakes and LSD. My supporting mods were 1.5 times the price of the BP turbo cause I couldn't sleep at night knowing I had those base brakes and an open diff with 500whp. Granted the setup I have now with the os giken is far better than the vlsd, but I had to spend a big chunk of money all at one time. This was a result of poor planning and not having the budget at the time I purchased the car back in 2014.

OP, make sure you pick your trim wisely.

Although, having the most bada$$ Z with no spoiler = worth it :icon18:

Yeah I have the base model. Sorry I forgot to say that.

If you'll note in his post, he specifically mentions that he noticed the damage upon removing the front license plate mount.

nis350 10-05-2016 07:25 PM

Yes I did, but the scratches on his other post are extended outside of the plate holder and they are not showing up here on this pic.

Well, I agree they the scratches appear to extend towards the RH side of the car beyond the edge of the license plate holder, but in the first day pic that is the far side from the camera. I'm not so sure you would expect to seem them from that angle. So maybe they were visible and just went unnoticed?

nis350 10-05-2016 07:49 PM

the scratches on the passenger side is quite deep and noticeable with what appears to be white or gray paint. It is at least a few inches outside of the plate holder, probably more if the pic wasn't cut off.

If the dealer/seller tried to cover it up, I imagine they would at least buffer off the white paint?

I guess anything is possible......

Posted in the warrenty thread about this. The white is from when I brought it home and waxed it, that's when I noticed it. It wasn't noticeable until then.
