Anyone else with this issue? Interior silver bits fading

I just got my Z a few weeks ago, a used '12 Base, and I'm only now able to post, so I wanted to see what you guys have seen. I've searched high and low all over the forum to no avail...

Some of the silver trim pieces are turning white... Both sill plates, and the rear brace. I haven't noticed this on any other parts. At first, I wet the spots and they seemed to disappear for a few seconds, but came back. Have any of you ever seen this?

I'm not so sure I've ever seen that before. No matter what you are wanting to do, we could offer to wrap it in our signature 'forged carbon' carbon fiber. We have wrapped many interiors in legitimate carbon (no carbon stickers) many times.

Shipping those door sills, along with any other parts you would like wrapped, is very straight forward and we only promise the finest result in quality and craftsmanship.

On the door sill plates : From what it looks like it is moisture born water staining/etching. Either you have very high humidity's and are developing a condensation pocket between the inner seal and outer seal on the door, or you have a seal on the bottom of the door that isn't really making a good seal and that could be car wash soap etching. I saw this on another one of my vehicles a long time ago and found it was due to neighbors sprinklers hitting the bottom of a door seal just right. It etched the chrome stepper plate.

As for the rear brace bar : I say it's Humidity mixed with AC cold temperatures causing condensation. I found water beads once in mine after we had a mid 90's rain and I had AC full blast. (Just re-adjust the air vents to not shoot at the brace bar so much??)

To remove possibly : Use a diluted CLR and water mixture - or a "water stain" remover. clean that off thoroughly when done. Then get either a silicone based oil or WD-40. Use a rag and just wipe the surfaces to prevent any future spreading or moisture born etching.

Always wipe out both door jams after washing with any kind of pressure sprayers or even garden hoses. And again wipe with the silicone oil or wd-40 rag. Doesn't have to be an oil slick - but just a light dressing if you will.... Like armor-all on a dash.....

That's my 2 cents......

Thanks guy! I just bought the car so I have no idea how they treated the car before me. I do know it was a 19 year old girl that owned it and it's only got 38k miles on a 4 year old car, so I don't think she abused it. She did leave minor scratches ALL OVER IT, I assume from her nails and rings and things.

Your deal sounds close to mine - I found my ride with 23K and it had been a 3 year lease prior. yours at 4 years and 38K is not bad at all.

I had scratches on the drivers door handle on my ride. Undoubtedly a ring. Used a variable speed dremel with SOFT buff pads and Maguire's. Used lower speed and just took my time.

The prior owner had to have been wearing a freaking BOULDER to cause all those marks on my 2014!!!

A dealer here in DFW just listed a 2014 with 13K. I checked it out after dinner and it had the original papers still in glove box. Same as mine but lower miles.

This may be a long-shot, but those door sills come with a thin film on the surface that is normally removed after installation. The film is meant to protect the sill from any minor abrasion while in storage/transit as well as during installation. It could be that the film was never removed and it has started to deteriorate.

Good idea, but no, the plastic has been removed.

I seriously hope it isn't a leak or condensation causing it. I keep it garaged and only drive it a time or two a week, so I don't plan on getting it wet, but our weather is really unpredictable and humid, so that is always a possibility. Just doesn't make sense that it's that way on the brace, too, unless the rear window leaks, too...

Here's a shot of the rear brace. It looks like it would wipe off, but it doesn't. I'm afraid to try any kind of aggressive cleaner to risk more damage, but surely there's something that will take it off...

solteroblues, I did some checking this weekend on this thread, a little bit further than what we discussed last week. My Nissan service rep here in DFW definitely said I was on target with it being humidity related and AC and rapid cabin temperature shifts. I just noticed your location - and yeah, you have high humidity capability.

He said that the CLR idea (diluted calcium lime rust remover) won't hurt the finish.

The other point I made about using a silicone based oil on the parts to prevent water etching was also seconded by him. He came up with a rather ingenious form of the oil too.....

He said find a RC Car shock oil and wet a rag with it and wipe it on like an armor-all treatment. Then keep an eye on that bar and plates when it rains and you use AC and temps are above 75-80. when wet - just wipe em off in the future.....

My 2014 base model doesn't have kickplates. Just molded plastic. So you either got the most amazing deal in the world on a sport or touring package or the previous owner installed those.

My Z I purchased brand new came with the illuminated kickplates as an upgrade from Nissan.
