Default Hatchback Springs

Is there a fix for the hatchback springs to open the gate easier. I am not talking about the struts but the springs thats located in the hatch on each side.

When I open the hatch it does not pop all the way up so I have to use my hand to lift it up from a locked position.

Did a search on here and could not find any hits on this topic..

You can put clear adhesive bumper pads on the area of the car that contacts the springs. Play around with various thicknesses to give you the best result.

There are other options, like removing the ballast weigh that is inside the hatch door (do a search). Or purchasing Nismo hatch springs (they are stronger).

You can also pop the plastic covers off and add a few pennies on each side. I was having the same problem you described and two pennies per spring solved it. Works great now.
Rusty and Zbrah like this.

So these longer 350Z springs help or not?

I have a sport with added Nismo wing. I tried pennies, nickels and removed the weight in the hatch mentioned above but still had the problem.

Then I bought a 6 pack of 1/4" thick 1" diameter circular magnets at Home Depot (Lowes has them also) for $2.

Stuck one on each side of the body in the rear opening right where the rubber boot on the hatch rests; the magnets are strong and don't move. Problem solved!

How do the magnets help it open easier? Wouldn't they hold the hatch in place more and prevent it from popping open? Or did you reverse polarity?

My guess would be reversed polarity

I think he is just using the magnets to stick to the bottom base of the hatch, so the rubber springs hit them when the hatch closes.

The magnets are 1/4" thick and 1" in diameter (I corrected the earlier post). When you stick them to the metal body, they are not magnetic to the coils. They are ceramic magnets so they won't rust. Although I'm fine with one on each side, if you still have an issue or it needs more thickness just add another magnet to each side. The pennies and nickels aren't enough, the plastic bumpers are too soft; you need a hard surface like these magnets for the hatch springs to bounce off of that is higher than the stock body with no drilling, gluing, sticky adhesive or modification of any kind. Here is a pic of the magnets:
