Cleaning the Tommy Kaira Knob

How do you guys clean your TK knob? I don't want to mess up the finish on mine (when it needs cleaning). Any advice from members that have a knob is appreciated

FairladyZ10PG 09-10-2015 12:44 AM

wear gloves while driving

/thread

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 12:44 AM

Lol that would work

Cleaning the Tommy Kaira Knob

Honestly thinking possibly soap and water on a microfiber, but seeing if anyone polished theirs?

-Raj

jcosta79 09-10-2015 01:35 AM

So you're asking if we polish our knobs?

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 01:36 AM

Well not exactly in those words...

-Raj

Zbrah 09-10-2015 01:44 AM

Jergens works well back in my college days;)

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 01:45 AM

LOL

DEpointfive0 09-10-2015 01:59 AM

You all should clear coat the knob.

Then clean it with whatever you like

jcosta79 09-10-2015 06:46 AM

So we should put a protective covering over our knobs?

FairladyZ10PG 09-10-2015 11:26 AM

^not recommended lol takes away all the feelin'

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 11:28 AM

So clear coat a really rare JDM piece? Lol, I'm thinking about just putting this damn thing in a baseball show case so it never has to be used. Smh :(

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 11:29 AM

I've actually heard that the turtle yellows after awhile of use. Any experience with that?

-Raj

FairladyZ10PG 09-10-2015 12:08 PM

I've read that someone here mentioned that it turns copperish yellow after some use but others like terribleone mentioned that all is good

So I guess we'll find out soon enough lol

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 12:09 PM

Lol true true

I heard KY jelly works wonders.

KamiSpeed 09-10-2015 04:07 PM

So sad these are discontinued......

birdman71 09-10-2015 05:04 PM

I have had mine installed for about 2 or 3 months now daily use and yeah the very outer silver lining of the turtle turns a brass/copper gold color but honestly I almost like the different color on there because it brings out the turtle in the middle more. Almost adds that classy gold and silver watch look to the knob itself.

Honestly other than that I would assume that a light luke warm soap and water mix would work. I wouldn't use a soap with a bunch of harsh chemicals but invest into like a good organic soap or something along those lines if you want to be super safe.

I wouldn't ever clear coat it though.. My car gets way too hot and sits in direct sun all the time and would come out one day during lunch and find a melted clear coat mess on the leather boot.. so in conclusion

I AGREE ON HOW PUTTING A PROTECTIVE COATING ON OUR KNOBS TAKES AWAY ALL THE FEELING AND FUN...

Just gotta get her ready and keep going over and over until it breaks. Then will have to take a break and clean her up and then do it all over again

Bulletproof Automotive/ 370zTune will be making a limited batch of knobs but they are going to be made by a company called Rowen

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-10-2015 05:07 PM

Thanks for the awesome response and feedback Birdman71. I'll take that advice! Can you post a pic of the brass copper color your turtle surrounding turned?

That's the worst I have seen. The guy probably wore a ring or something. Most of the ones that have been up for sale have been in good shape.

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-11-2015 09:22 AM

Same here, I notice a copper colored ring around the turtle too, looks pretty cool in my opinion. He definitely had to wear a ring I think too, maybe even a girl with jewelry like bracelets or something too? Lol

-Raj

birdman71 09-11-2015 06:05 PM

Thanks cooltoy for getting those pictures up of the coloring. and that is just a horrible looking knob lol Definetly a ring was worn for all the color change.

Ill get one of my knob up here in a couple minutes. It wont be all scratched and stuff like that haha

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-11-2015 06:10 PM

I hope not haha

-Raj

GaleForce 09-11-2015 06:18 PM

I would buy two more knobs as back-up. If one yellows, toss it out.

Here is a good pic of my Hebi Babi

Like I said I almost like the distinguished look it gives the entire shift knob.

Nice! I don't see a single scratch, how do you keep it so clean? Lol

-Raj

birdman71 09-11-2015 06:34 PM

Well it all starts with a shower every morning and every night.. oh wait the shift knob haha...

Anyways haha... no Rings are ever worn on my right hand haha even my watch is on my left wrist. Other than that honestly I take a small microfiber cloth with a tiny bit of water and just wipe it off and then dry and polish with a big fluffy microfiber cloth. Do it maybe once a week. Havent felt comfortable putting chemicals on it. And if its ever in direct sunlight hitting it or anything I will put something over it to cover it.
Not only that I don't eat in my car, food stays in the bags till I get to the destination haha. Just kinda gotta bebi it (pun intended)

I think I may be a little OCD, but I can't stand to have my turtle crooked lol.

birdman71 09-11-2015 06:51 PM

Ive never used polish
I just dry the knob off and take one finger in the corner of the microfiber cloth and do the waxing motion with the small circles and just polish it like that. No chemicals or products just a little water and a microfiber towel

I like it partially because of the fact its faced towards me. I am going to be fixing it when I get my short shifter installed though.

cooltoy 09-11-2015 07:37 PM

I bet you almost cried when it first started wearing out.

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-11-2015 07:38 PM

I might not even use mine lol

Easy fix. Wrap some plumbing tape around your shaft :rolleyes:put enough tape on the threaded portion then twist the knob on and adjust it to your liking. If you want photo of the shaft, they're in my private album ;)
