Steering Lock...just went

I have a 2010 Nissan 370Z Base model with several mods.

So I've had this issue for a few months now (around February this year it started). My steering lock is faulty and finally failed this morning when I tried to start my car this morning. I've been through this forum over the months and located different fixes for this issue starting from; removing the fuse, cutting the brown wire, and then beating the d*mn steering lock to death. Each and every one of the temporary fixes worked for a while but then it would go out again. I have been trying to do everything under the sun not to go and spend $1200 plus to get it fixed from Nissan. It's ironically because it’s a simple box under the steering wheel that I've taken out several times. I'm trying to figure out where the $1200 plus is coming from; anyone please explain!

The ultimate fix for this would be to drop it off at Nissan and just have them fix it. I wish I could do something in order not to spend that much money on this little box. Nissan has put a bad taste in my mouth (pause) and don’t think I will be buying another Nissan in my lifetime. The car is great and I love it to death but with the help I've received from Nissan (which is none), I think I will be investing in a American muscle for my next sports car. I love my tuner cars but this little incident just rubbed me the wrong way (pause).

Oh yea, and no recall on this part even though all 2009-2010 Nissan cars with the steering lock will go one day. The part is faulty and don't even know why they would put this on a car. Smh...time to go crack open my piggy bank I'm so disappointed in Nissan right now

So what you're saying is that you got it to work a few times and NOW it totally failed?

If so why didn't you just pull the fuse or cut the brown wire?

I suggest one more beat down on the steering box and pull the fuse/cut the wire.

The service recall should cover your Z unless it maybe a late 10 but I think it's BS that they deem it not covered iF thats the case by vin.

If the power to the lock mechanism has been removed in a proper sequnce, there is no reason for it to engage (and then jam). There is no point of removing the fuse *AND* cutting a brown wire. Replacing the lock plate/mechanism doesn't guarantee a permanent solution.

I thought there was a TSB recall on this? Call a Nissan dealer and give them your VIN.

There is a recall. If your VIN is included in the campaign, then make the dealer pay to tow it in and fix it.

And once they fix it, PULL THE DAMN FUSE!!

pulling the fuse or cutting the wire are not temporary fixes if you did them properly, also like a few others have said....THERE IS A RECALL ON THE STEERING LOCK!

maybe ur battery is going too.

steering lock failure from wat i saw were pretty consistent with cars about 3yrs in with weaker cca.

needless to say my 6yr old Z is on its factory battery and RevC. no issue.

Just left the dealership not to long ago and they said that the vehicle isnt covered for the recall. My Z was made in 2010 June. I made sure that I put the car into ACC mode when it was working and pulled the fuse; a few weeks later, it didnt work anymore. I then decided to cut the wire once I got the car working again and yet again, a few weeks later; it failed. So now the vehicle is with the dealership and I'm dreading the phone call I'm going to receive to tell me how much I owe them.

If there is a recall, could one of you send me the message or something in regards that I can take to the dealership saying that the part is to be replace free of charge. Please PM me this information if you have it. I dont feel like draining my savings account for this part; I was looking to upgrade my brakes but now its going to be put on the back burner because of it...

I recently had the steering lock freeze up on me for the first time and called Nissan corporate and checked with 2 dealers with my vin and mentioned the recall also, but they said my vehicle isn't covered. So not all 370z are covered.
So I banged the crap out of the steering column and pulled the fuse and it has been fine. Wonder if you did the procedure correctly. Anyone else have this issue after pulling the fuses?

it is interesting that you pulled the fuse and cut the brown wire and it would still lock? Did you actually hear the lock when you turn off your car? From all the posts I've read, cutting the brown wire would eliminate the power from the lock. Are you sure you cut the correct brown wire and pulled the correct fuse?

It is true that the steering lock recall only covered certain 2009 - 2010 cars. Mine has a built date of 04/2010 and it isn't covered.

mid 2011 models and up completely did away with the steering lock

i pulled the fuse for my 2009's steering lock right after i got it, i never hear it lock anymore
