Cracked/peeling dash?

Hello everyone. I had my Z for 5 years and still running great, but there is one problem though, my interior seems to be cracked/peeling at some areas. The thing is, my Z is always garaged so it doesn't made any sense at all if it was caused by heat. So guys, do any of you have the same problem as mine?

Looks like a manufacturer's defect IMO. No modern car over $15k should have cracking like that before at least 10 years.

Yeah that's what i have in mind as well. But unfortunately a friend of mine who have the Z for about the same time as i am, have this problem too.. I guess i need to remove the dash and refinish it..

Your location says you live in Brunei. If you are parking outside, any interior is going to deteriorate faster than if you were in, say, Canada. Using cleaners/protectants that leech the plasticizers from the material will hasten the process. A solid black interior doesn't help.

But I agree with Push370zzz - a dash made with modern materials should hold up for more than five years. Unless you have been abusing it.

YzGyz 06-20-2015 08:52 AM

My little bro's Altima is cracking a little. It's not a big long one like you have but it's breaking down. He thinks it's started when he used a certain interior cleaner. Mayhaps that's it?

Yep, sun and heat will kill the dash...thats all there is to it.

benji 06-20-2015 09:19 AM

my steering wheel is peeling on my Z, i park it indoors and use a windshield cover when i park on sunny days. shift knob is doing the same thing :/. btw guys, if anyone is interested in knowing, a replacement circle (not the whole airbag, button controls) but just the wheel itself from nissan OEM is $1250

kenchan 06-20-2015 11:35 AM

hummmm.. dat sucks. :(

ur car turning into hulk? almost looks like something puffed up from the inside or something. :ugh:

Z_ealot 06-20-2015 11:51 AM

My Z is 6 years old and the interior is in almost perfect condition...i agree with what somebody else already said, i think it's whatever interior cleaner you were using that basically is making the plastics shrink

kenchan 06-20-2015 12:17 PM

op wat were u using to clean the dash? :icon08:

most of the time all i do is mist Griot's SpeedShine into a mf towel and dust off the interior. once a year i'd use Prima Nero to dress it up.. and this is a diluted 50/50 with water mix even. no cracks. my 11 yr old G and my dd's are all cleaned the same way.

TexasChuck 06-20-2015 04:49 PM

Dash Protectants?

Soon as I used one of those "Protectants " on my Suburban's dash , it started to crack and split. Jeeeez!

You can buy the 2015 Nismo wheel like I did for about $350 shipped from Japan (depending on the Yen). Check out RHDjapan.com. It is OEM, Nissan part number and packaging.

nis350 06-21-2015 01:07 AM

really? aren't they suppose to protect it from cracking and fading? I am surprise there are any lawsuits.

SouthArk370Z 06-21-2015 07:58 AM

I don't like a shiny dash so I use distilled or deionized water and a lint-free cloth. If I run into something that water won't take off, I'll spray a very small amount of low-gloss protectant on my cloth, clean the whole dash to prevent color variations, then wipe off as much as I can with a clean cloth.
If someone else is cleaning the car, I tell them not to use ArmorAll-type products at all - "If it's not paint, glass, or chrome, I don't want it shiny."

I've heard a lot of horror stories similar to TexasChuck's - dash gets worse after using a protectant on a less-that-perfect dash. If you want to use protectants, start using them before the dash shows any signs of aging.

Yeah i live in Brunei, but i rarely use the Z. She's kept in the garage all the time and rarely even parked outside. Probably a few times when i was cleaning her but that was it. No abusing was done, i baby'd the car and that's the reason why i'm concerned :( cause i did nothing bad to her

The interior was treated with Diamondbrite's interior detailing stuff in her earlier life, and i wipe them clean with warm towel after every cleaning session.

shaun66 06-21-2015 04:24 PM

Dam that sucks. My dash just melts when it sits outside in the Texas heat. No cracking yet!

Spooler 06-21-2015 04:41 PM

I don't put anything on my dashes. Just a wet cloth. The supposed protectants will trap heat and the dash gets hotter than with nothing applied.

VSS370z 06-21-2015 06:21 PM

My car is nearly 6 years and i am also having this problem at the exact same locations on the dash. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any solution :shakes head:

So it's confirmed that my Z is not the only one with this problem.. Well the only way to fix this is to refinish the dash :shakes head:

I am not fully sure but it's possible :(

kenchan 06-22-2015 12:38 PM

maybe get a material expert comment on the ingredients in their product vs the material nissan uses on their dash?

then sue diamondbright for compensation if they were the reason.

id also check with ur insurance people to see if dat can be covered.

some ford, chevy and dodge trucks split their dashes in about 5 years. :shakes head:

cyberbob_20 06-28-2015 04:17 AM

Hi Iwan72, I'm from Brunei and my Z is exhibiting the same problem. Like yours, mine's rarely driven, kept in a garage and when driven, mostly at night. Only 46 thousand kilometers in 4 years.

I would suggest you hound Boustead and insist they fix it under goodwill warranty. I'm doing exactly that and waiting for them to give me a decision. You should not have to fix this out of your own pocket.

What a joke. Cracked dashboard in a car in this day and age is rare regardless of age and brand.

Best of luck to you.

Guys, my 5 years plus old 370z is exhibiting the same cracking at almost the same area on the dash. This suck!

Let me know how are you dealing with it. Is there is oem part replacement for this?

cyberbob_20 10-21-2016 04:54 AM

Hi viceroy666,

I know it has been a while since you posted your message. I managed to get the dealer here to replace the entire dash, I had to pay the labor charges which I wasn't too happy with but they did pay for the part. Considering my car is out of warranty, it's not too bad I suppose.

The dash is still ok at the moment but I expect it to crack again in the future unless Nissan has changed the material used to make the part which I doubt.

B&W_Evader 10-21-2016 08:36 AM

FWIW, garaged, damp towel only for cleaning and windshield shade when parked outside in the sun... dash is still perfect. I'd be pissed if this happened to me but my guess would be the protectant killed it.

Louie cat 10-31-2016 08:09 AM

I have plans to buy a new dash for mine since I have a sticky dash. It is from the intense heat in florida. I found one on line for just about 1k ,but the dealer wants 8hrs labor to do the job.
I haven't really searched too much ,but the shop that fixed my seat wasn't interested in doing the job.

Rusty 06-10-2017 06:07 PM

I use 303 Protectant.

Gianni 06-11-2017 09:22 AM

Mine sits in Arizona sun/heat all day everyday and no cracks at all Burbank I do go in there and use armoral interior cleaner/ protectant once a month

cyberbob_20 06-13-2017 02:56 AM

Hi abgyak,

I spoke to Kevin Lee. If I remember correctly, he's the manager of the service department. Labor cost was $350.

Good luck.

hubers 12-07-2018 10:03 AM

How old was your 370 Z when the dealer replaced the dash? The dash in my 2010 is now cracking is exactly the same way.

tonythetiger 02-07-2021 11:25 AM

After 10 yrs of ownership, my dash is starting to crack at the same spots mentioned in these photos...other z owners are having the same issues. The z spent most of its time in the garage.

370nismobkuz 02-25-2021 02:13 PM

My 2009 370 Z Nismo also had cracks on the dash where you showed yours near the door. After the Tokata airbag recall, I had a huge crack all the way across my passenger side. The dealer refused to even discuss it, and when I called corporate Nissan to lodge a complaint, they blew me off as well. My 1988 Stanza was outside for 11 years and 121,000 miles, and the dash never cracked. My 370 Z has always been garaged and has 41,000 miles on it. And the dash looks like crap. Nissan is not the company it used to be. I am very disappointed.

Lvcky69 02-25-2021 02:41 PM

In that case, I would learn how to make carbon fiber parts and just lay it down on the pieces that are already cracking. I did my doors and the center dashboard for this very reason. Mine is a 17. Still looks brand new.
