THE easy way to remove shift knob with out damaging it
Hi I just installed my NISMO shift knob today, looking at all these problems people have in taking off the OEM one, I want to share a tip with you guys.
I found it very easy to get a good grip by wrapping a micro fiber towel around the stock shift knob. The microfiber towel grips on the leather part of the stock knob very tightly, and by wrapping the entire towel on the knob you get a bigger area to grab on to. I was able to grab and twist the knob that is wrapped with the towel with both hand without slipping. this should ensure you do not damage the stock knob when u are removing it. |

The Z's knob is kinda nice as is. I don't plan on changing it at the moment... |

another easy tip is that you dont even have to use a screw driver to lift up the base, you can place your fingers inside the shift boot area and lift up on it, pops right up with ease.

Wow lol
I didn't want to take the shift knob out this way to avoid stressing the shift linkage underneath. I ended up using a vice and wrapped a towel all the way around the knob and used a flat tip screwdriver as leverage through the shifter connect to loosen the loctite grip. Got any pics of your nismo shift knob? There are several Nismo shift knobs and I'm curious how they look installed. For now, I'm still a fan of the stock shift knob.

I suppose if you can turn the know without tools the linkage might be ok. Btw, after you raise the boot and its ring, make sure to place a towel under it cause the metal clips will very easily scratch your center console. |

here are some pictures I took of the new shift knob for those interested, its the aluminum nismo one. I like it a lot, it have a very mechanical feel to it, you can feel all the clanks and vibrations from the transmission in your hand. It is lighter than the stock one though, so some people may not like it.
