OEM Shift Knob Removal
 
I recently purchased a NISMO shift knob and after looking around the web for how to remove the OEM knob I have a couple questions.

1. Should the car be in neutral or in gear when unscrewing the OEM knob?
2. Ive seen pics of guys using a wrench or pillars on the shift shaft, what does that do? Some guys just untwist the OEM knob and it comes right off.

1. I had it in neutral.
2. You need to keep the shaft from twisting. It depends on how much lock-tight Nissan put on when installing your OEM knob. If it is not too much, you can twist it off by hand, if it's a lot, you may have to destroy the knob to get it off.

If it will come off easy, it doesn't really matter. If it is on there tight, put it in neutral to avoid undue stress on the forks and other parts.

As per cooltoy, it just depends on how much locktite they used at the factory and the wrench/pliers on the shaft is for backup.

i used neutral and held the shaft with locking pliers while i turned the knob.

on my car it was a lot of twisting to remove.

I can't find the picture I took of the aftermath of me removing my OEM knob.

Essentially it was torn to bits, the leather was separated from the plastic and the plastic knob itself was in over a dozen pieces.

Nothing recommended seemed to work, so I ended up using vise grips and towels. Even with the items mentioned earlier, still took me a good 30-45 minutes or so.

Thanks for all the help! I used a superior tools strap wrench with a leather strap that gripped the OEM knob extremely well and didnt damage it at all with no duct tape or towel covering it

edub apparently doesnt have experience on the super-thread-locked-knob-removal. lol
some of them come off easy, some of them not easy at all. :mad:

I cut a hole in the roof, attached the shift knob to a clamp hanging from the ceiling, and then spun the whole car around :tup:
