Plasti dipped flat black fangs.

Alright, so I decided to give plasti-dip a try to see how my car would look with blacked out fangs.

My first impressions:

I really like the blacked out look of the front fang area. Especially more so that my car is Pearl White.

I decided to leave a little portion of the lip, white, for a bit more contrast which came out great. However, using plasti dip and tape, is not a good combination because removing the tape is a real pain in the butt. It also tore up bits of pieces of the plasti dip as the tape was being removed. I used a little razor blade which made it a little easier. However, if you look closely, you can still tell that it's not perfectly straight.

Aside from the lip at the bottom and the edge not perfectly straight, I think the overall look is a 9/10. If I decide to keep the look, I think I will end up using real paint for a more permanent solution.

Plasti dip is a fantastic product that allows you to see a rough draft of your project without actually making the job permanent.

****Edit**** I decided to re-do the bottom and paint the whole thing. I also did the rear valence, it came out awesome.

I like it but, I think if I couldn't get that part line straight I would have dipped it all. That uneven edge would bug me I think but, it might just be the picture.

It bugs me as well and is the only part I didn't like about it. If I decide spray it with real paint, that won't be a problem because when the paint dries up, it will not stick on the the tape and stretch like the plasti dip does.

I plan on re-doing the bottom part over again tomorrow morning with the plasti dip.

I like the concept....but the end result is bad. If I did that, it'd be removed immediately.

Have you checked out Fonzi's tips/dipyourcar on YT? He has some great tips on how to apply plasti dip and get clean breaks/separation.

As retarded as the 370z's original catfish design was, something seems weird when you black out the entire interior of the grille like that. It reminds me a little of the GT-R, but missing the emblem in the center to make it not look like a giant empty crevasse.

I re-did the bottom, ended up painting the whole thing as it came out much much better. I also did the rear valence, which looks great!

basically the trick here is to use electrical/vinyl tape. i used the thinner stuff when i did mine as it is easier to curve. then remove while the plastidip is still wet. straight line. no sticking. done.

edit: looks like the OP went ahead and covered the whole thing, but i will leave this here in case anyone else finds it useful.

Only problem I would see with this is you would have to spray one full heavy coat all at once. Meaning you can't spray 4-5 coats letting each dry in between for better curing results. I guess it won't matter as much with plasti dip. I know with real paint, you have to be real careful about how much you spray at once or it will start to run.

yea you're right. it'd be tough to make it work with 4-5 coats with dry time in between.

my technique includes minimal dry time and only 3 coats; one super light w/ 30 secs dry time, one to get coverage w/ 60secs, and one thicker final coat for smoothness. I suppose the downside is that its a little harder to peel (I.e. you have to pull it more carefully if you remove it). however I don't get the rough, orange-peel look that a lot of people complain about. in terms of durability it still seems to hold; had it on the front of my BMW for 2 years with no peeling, nicks, etc. I only did it recently on my Z but I don't expect different results.

I've gotta give that a try. I haven't had much experience with plasti dip, but I figured more coats makes it easier to peel off. 3 coats should suffice, I suppose.

You can still do several coats, if you spray your last coat wet and pull the tape immediately. It works.

good tip. I've never tried it that way, but that's because i've always had poor results from the multiple coats with dry time in between methods. my first few attempts with multiple layers always wound up with bumps, waves, whatever. i "developed" my method in an effort to get the smoothest finish possible; talking about rattlecan plastidip. i've had several people comment that my dips are indistinguishable from real paint. I am by no means a plastidip expert though. I am sure there are other techniques out there are you generally satisfied with the smoothness when you do it that way? is there a technique for getting thick coverage while maintaining perfect smoothness?

This is something that I will be experimenting with soon. Sounds like it will be the perfect solution for being able to pull the tape off while still wet and getting on several layers of paint on there.
