I am by no means a plastidip expert though. I am sure there are other techniques out there are you generally satisfied with the smoothness when you do it that way? is there a technique for getting thick coverage while maintaining perfect smoothness?

Just spray a lot of coats. I've always found that the rattle can goes on really smooth. I did my whole car with the spray gun and it wasn't quite as smooth (think I just need to turn the gun down and spray lighter coats there too).
