^ agreed. I am not enthused about "shorter" tips as I am more concerned that the replacements will cover the rear area of the exhaust outlet and that the bolt is hidden. I would like it to emulate the HKS slip over style completely as to hide the exhaust outlet....

It won't just be shorter...they can't just be shorter...however the overall EFFECT will be shorter. Part of the design challenge now is designing something that will cover the section the tip will mount to and hide the bolts while allowing for installation using those same bolts. How do you access a bolt you can't see? This is being worked on.
Expect it to take a month or more.

Are your primary concerns the visual of the bolt from the inside or the outside of the tubing you have now?

The HKS tip has a roundhead allen key style bolt that goes thru to a locknut on the inside of the tip. Hardly noticeable and very acceptable. Just use the same design concept on the afterburner tip.
My primary concerns are keeping the approx 4" length of the tip as it slides back and over the exhaust outlet to give depth to the look. The length of the "afterburner" look or taper is secondary. And as a finish, I would love a brushed or polished steel look!

Thanks!!

The challenge with that design is they use a really oddball size of tubing for the tip, and it is not readily available in the US. :/ That won't stop me...it'll just take me another minute.

Hope to get the hurdles resolved soon! My HKS exhaust is begging for some XVO tips.

I've been in my head the last few hours and I got far enough to start throwing it in CAD.

The basic idea seen here is a tip assembly that slides over and butts up to the existing exhaust system, then is bolted in the two locations from the inside via a hidden welded nut (weld nuts not shown yet). The outer section will be supported by the center support ring and 4 welded tabs that will support rivets.

This current model extends and points out past the existing exhaust tube by 2" (The dark grey ring at the edge of the tip is the tip inner ring which butts up to the lighter grey tubing with the oval cutout representing the existing exhaust tubing.)

The tip is .25" thick, ranging from 4.5" OD inner tubing to 5" OD outer tubing.

Can anyone get me the exact measurements of the oval bolt cutout, including its distance from the edge? How far back do the existing tips extend from the oval bolt hole? Out past the tip? Thanks.

Updates.

Also considering adding a new design concept utilizing a perforated inner tube.

Hey Fringe,

I don't have access to my car at the moment, but I thought I could help with measuring the Ti tips for you.

I took some quick measurements from the mounting hole on the tip to the backside of the tip, so you can get an idea of length. Measurements are in MM.

Here is how the tip sits on the exhaust. Excuse my crude MS Paint skills, this is a very basic idea. But you can see how the exhaust tip extends past the steel inner exhaust, and also extends outward toward the rear of the car. Also, of course, the inner steel mounting piece has an oval mounting hole, so you can adjust the length. Pretty simple.

Here is a picture from the edge of the mounting hole to the edge of the backside of the tip (Not from the center of the mounting hole)

Here is another picture, where I tried to measure from the center of the mounting hole to the backside of the tip.

And here's a somewhat close measurement of the mounting hole to the EXIT of the exhaust tip. Don't forget that the tips are slant cut.

I hope that helps some. When I get my car back, I can do some more caliper measurements of the actual tail section of the exhaust for you.

EDIT: I also wanna note that from the side of the car, you could see the backside of the tips, showing that they were not a uniform piece of the exhaust. Not saying that it was a bad look, in fact, I loved the side profile, just a note I remembered.

I think an XVO Afterburner tip that was around the same length or somewhere close to the stock HKS tips would be good. Any other opinions on that?

Okay.

Two final things:

1. Does anyone know what size metric wrench fits the nut? From that I can tell what the actual bolt size is. If no one knows for sure, it's no biggie. I will use a grade 8 equivalent M8 and that will suffice for the app.

2. I need to know the distance the oval that the bolt goes through is from the outer edge of the exhaust system.

The design rendered above is it...save for adjusting the bolt hole size and making sure that the bolts are positioned so the tip can be snugged up to the exhaust system. None of the adjustments I need to make will affect the look of the tip.

So I posted them a while ago and no one responded, other than to ask when they would be finished...so I'm not sure what's wrong. The conditions everyone set have been met. The tips slide over and conceal the whole exhaust section just like the original tubes do, and these variants completely conceal the attaching bolts from the outside.

What's wrong? What did I miss?

Thanks! Working with actual forum members to develop something they want isn't usually done, and I really hope this turns into a success story.
